The monthly meeting of the Technical High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present: Mr. H. Trimble (chairman.), Mrs. E. A. Copping, Dr. Gordon, and Messrs. E. S. Rutherfurd, S. -Macalister, J. W. Boon, J. McAllister, J. H. Thomas, C. M. Burkett, V. Johnson, E. Marshall. The following appointments to the staff were recommended: Master of English and modern languages and first assistant master, Mr. F. Bowler, 8.A.; agricultural and science master, Mr. H. C. Johnson; mistress for general science or mathematics. Miss W. A. Cathie, M.A. ; commercial subjects, Mr. H. C. Jenkins; general subjects, Miss W. E. G. Knight, M.A.; home science, Miss Elsie Young, B.Sc.

The director (Mr. A. H. R. Amess) reported for the month as follows: During the year the school has, to a large extent, been hampered by lack of material and equipment, especially for science work. A great deal more money must be obtained from the department for apparatus and equipment. The sporting activities of the school have been very satisfactory indeed, both the boys’ football and the girls’ hockey teams having distinguished themselves by winning the central championship for their respective grades. The report was adopted. THE MARDI GRAS. The various Mardi Gras committees had a busy day on Broadway to-day, when the excellent weather conditions tempted town and country folk on to the streets in large numbers. Several produce stalls did brisjp business, and the collectors and the promoters of various guessing and other competitions all plied a good trade. Miss Loi Kivell, the country candidate, gave an exhibition of club-swinging at the Mardi Gras headquarters, Messrs. Kelly and Vinsen supplying the music. The 8.8. candidate (Mis; Eileen Kelly) has again reached the top of the poll, the sports' candidate (Miss Lulu Nash) being second, the A.S.A. candidate (Miss Linda Walsh) thitd, and the country candidate (Miss Loi Kivell) fourth. There was a good attendance at the Medina Tea-rooms last night, when the A.S.A. entertainers gave an enjoyable musical programme. On Tuesday evening the sports committee are giving a return dance at Tarata,. when an enjoyable evening is anticipated. The sports’ social and dance at Strathmore was a successful little function, the Serenaders rendering a pleasing programme of musical and other items. CHURCH SALE OF WORK. For the purpose of raising funds for the Holy Trinity Church, the Ladies’ Sewing Guild held a sale of work at the Parish Hall to-day. The sale was formally opened by the Rev. C. W. Howard in the presence of a large gathering. A number of stalls, artistically' arranged, did good business throughout the day, and were in charge of the following: Produce: Mesdames C. W. Howard, Davis, Gander and Childs. Lollies: Mesdames Robins, Bridger and Miss Mclnnes. Fancy Stall: Mesdames Rutherfurd, A. W. Budge, Geo. Hall and Miss Young. Plain Needlework: Mesdames Hinton, Carryer, Cormack, and Good. Children’s Stall: Mesdames Judd, Rudkin and Sanderson. The were in charge of Mesdames Hugh Jackson and J. B. .Richards and other lady helpers. Other attractions included: Hoop-la, wlpch was in charge of Mrs. Abraham and MrS. Spicer, and Mr. Burley controlled the hippopotamus. Mrs. Dixon, -who has acted as secretary to the Guild and has done much useful work, is also carrying out the secretarial duties in connection with the bazaar. GENERAL ITEMS. In view of his appointment to the board which has been deputed by the Government to re-value soldiers’ farms, the chairman of the Stratford County Council (Mr. E. Walter) expressed his willingness, at Saturday’s meeting of rhe council, to resign the chairmanship. He stated that during the , next few months his time would be largely • occupied by the business of his recent ap- ■ pointment, and he did not wish to preju- ' dice the work of the council by retaining 1 the chairmanship. The council would not i hear of the resignation, however, and Cr. T. ' R. Anderson was appointed deputy-cha rman to act in Cr. Walter’s absence. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. T. N. Liardet was proposed by Mr. J. T. Belcher at Saturday’s meeting of the Stratford County Cour.'-!, and was carried in the customary manner. Mr. Belcher said he had had the honor of being associated with the late Mr. Liardet. in several capacities on local bodies, and ' had found him a very active citizen. i Mr. D. F. Wilbur, American ConsulGeneral at Wellington, will arrive in Strat- ! ford on Tuesday. The Stratford Cham- 1 ber of Commerce is making arrangements ' to entertain Mr. Wilbur at the Borough i Council chambers, and representatives of I the local bodies are being invited to be pre- | sent. Mr. Wilbur, who is keenly interested ' in agricultural matters, will attend the Stratford A. & P. Show on Wednesday and Thursday. The residents-of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffaney’s, ’ Broad- i way.
