? THE ANNUAL APPEAL. SUM OF £I3B,RAISED. There is a well-known picture depicting a scene in a busy London street. All traffic is temporarily suspended at the direction of the outstretched arm of a man in blue, while a small child, in company with his nurse, crosses the street in safety. "His Majesty tnc Baby” is the title of the portrait, and it was “His Majesty the Baby” who ruled supreme in the streets of New Plymouth yesterday, when the first or the two-day annual Plunket appeal, organised by the New Plymouth branch of the Plunket Society, was made through the medium of a produce mart in the vestibule of Everybody’s Theatre. A house-to-house and street oolle'c+ion was also made by willing helpers. As a result of the first, day’s effort the sum of £l3B was raised. The appeal to “help the mothers and save the babies” always meets with a splendid response by townspeople, and the opening of the collection, boxes lace in the day proved that the public had aonin responded in a liberal manner. Donors of 2s 6d and upwards were presented with a- badge, and these red signs were greatly in evidence during the day. An attractive of produce. cakes, flowers, nnr, e f P waa made on tlm stalls, which bad been arranged 'ti the theatre entrance. The children had done their part well bv- providin'? the egsre which were on sale in response to the society’s appeal to the schools. A busy time was experienced by those in charge of the stalls, manv people making .a point of doinr their market day shopping at the society’s stalls. Before the end of the afternoon everything had been disposed of. The Carlton tea and dining rooms generously provided luncheon *o all the workers, while morning and afternoon tea. was dispensed at the Plunket rooms. The baby show will bp a special attraction. 150 entries having been received altogether in (ho twelve classes, which range from infants under three months of ago up to sturdy bairns of two summers. and including a class for twins, for which six have been entered. Dr. Hazel Allison, of Waitara, will carry out the judging at 2 p.m. Tn addition, complete arrangements have been made to provide amusement for young and old alike. There will also be several stalls, and afternoon tea will be available. Provided the weather remains fine an enloyable function is assured for all.
