HAWERA SHOW.
PEOPLE’S DAY ■A LARGE ATTENDANCE. FURTHER, AWARDS. It was recognised on Wednesday that all that was required, to ensure the complete success of the Egmont A. and P. Show at Hawera was a fine day yesterday for People’s Day, and with the fine d.ay came a great crowd. From early morning cars began to arrive from all directions, and when ‘ the townspeople gathered in the afternoon it is estimated that there must have been fully seven thousand present.
The most interesting event of the day was the grand parade, and the ring side presented an animated scene as the prize winning cattle and horses were led into the ring and admirably marshalled, by Mr. T. A. Winks, making a magnificent spectacle that could not but fail to impress even the most casual observer with the value of Taranaki’s wealth producers. For the farmer there was plenty of interest, and the cattle, sheep, and pig pens were circled by interested spectators throughout the morning, as was also the home? industries shed. The trade displays were well patronised, whilst the numerous side shows all appeared, to do good, business.
Judging was proceeded with without any delays, and by the time fixed for the competitions everything was clear. The competitions proved very interesting. The high jump was a good contest, being finally won by H. L. Vines, Kiriwha, who cleared 5.9, creating for the show a new record, which previously stood at sft. 81in. The owner wins a special trophy. The horse and the rider (Jos. McCarthy) received an ovation when the result was announced. N. B. Doolaghty’s King was second. The Egmont champion jum.ning competition was won by Mrs Riddiford’s 'Slippery Sam. The arrangements for the conduct of the show were again splendid, a tribute to the organising ability of the secretary (Mr. M. C. Crighton) and his officials, who were the recipients of many congratulations on the success achieved —a success the society thoroughly deserves. During the afternoon the Hawera Citizens’ Band rendered an enjoyable programme of music. Great interest was taken in the boys’ and girls’ cow judging competition, which was under the supervision of Messrs IT. C. Johnson and Syme, of the Taranaki [Education Board. Mr. I' 1 . Mills (the judge) expressed himself as agreeably surprised at the high standard of work shown, which he considered reflected great credit on those who. had given the instruction. Mr. Chamberlain, of Danneyirke, who judged the pig section, seated that he had judged in both Islands and this was the best display he had ever seen in the Berkshire classes. There was very strong competition in the young hoar and sow classes. C. H. Washer won the championship in the former and Dan Stewart in the latter, vliilst Revell and Sons, of Kaponga, owned the reserve champions in each. K. McNae, of Hawera. secured, the Berkshire, breeders’ cup, which was allotted 4 for most points. A much neglected class was the Tamworth, in which there was only one entry, a sow owned by Air. K. McNae, which the judge considered a fine animal. As this breed is particularly suitable for crossing for export purposes it is a wonder it does not receive more attention. The judge (Mr. Morgan, of Woodville), who has judged at most of the I shows in the North Island, said that as ■’ a whole the milch cows were excepi tionally good: in fact, he had never ' seen a better lot. The champion dairy I cow, Elf's Beauty, stood out, hut the ' second cow, a three-year-old Ayrshire heifer, should be very, hard to beat as a dairy cow at next year’s shows. The two-year-olds were in fine line, tae champion Jersey. Aonas Jewel, having to give place to a Friesian heifer owned by IT. E. Johnson (Hawera), which the judges considered superior on udder development. Additional awards are:—
