s MONTHLY MEETING. / The monthly meeting of the Waitomo County 1 Council was held on November 10, when there were present: Councillors Were (chairman), j- Boddy, Leech. Thoms, Lee, Wilson, Smyth, fl Bowick, and Julian. A letter was read from the Minister for Public Works regretting that he could not see his way to make provision for the maintenance of the Te Kuiti-Hangatiki road on the current The Public Trustee also wrote In connection with the same road, in regard to an implication for a loan of £3700, which the council had offered to take in instalments. The matter had received careful consideration, but it was regretted that the application could not be en- . ; tertained at. present. An offer from L. Wilson to rent the ooun- . cil’s whare at Pio Pio at 10s per week -was acMr. J. L. Hatton applied for permission to erect a gate on the Maagatoa Road. Cr. Wilson said he had no particular objection to the request, but the position was, that though the council gave permission for the erection of gates they could not order their removal. Several councillors pointed out that permission was given to erect gates only during the pleasure of the council. Cr. Wilson disagreed, and said he had proposed a motion some months ago, to the effect that a certain settler be prosecuted for not removing gates at the request of the council, and nothing had been done. However, Hatton's request was reasonable enough, and he would move that it be granted. -Carried. A motion was also carried authorising the prosecution of the settler mentioned for not removing gates when requested to do so. Nine Moltaulti settlers asked to be trans-
ferred from the Aria to the Tangltu riding by an alteration of the existing, boundaries.—’Referred to special committee for action. Messrs. Carmichael, Walker, Wootten, Mlln, and Fetch, of Mairoa, drew the council’s attention to the bad state of the Hnutauru Road from the Ngapaenga Junction. The petition pointed out that, it was necessary >for something to be done nt once in order to save a big expenditure later on.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer with power to act. Mr. R. C. Bowick was empowered to erect a telephone line subject to the usual conditions. A request from Mr. H. Tate, asking that, the road leading to his property be graded, was I acceded to. The engineer was instructed to grade the unl metalled portion of Trooper’s Road, as applied j for by Mr. H. H. Cleaver. i The ranger was instructed to attend to stray- , Ing horses on the Waitanguru Road. j The resignation of Councillor Thoms from the finance committee was accepted with regret. Crs. Thoms and Julian strongly supported a motion asking the inspector for noxious weeds to take stringent measures regarding the spread of ragwort at Waitanguru and .other parts of the country. Cr. Julian brought up the question of effecting additions to the surfacemen’s dwelling at Kopaki, and, with the engineer, was given power to act in the matter of alterations. The same councillor was also responsible for a motion requesting Waitete Road settlers to clear the road frontage of noxious weeds. Cr. Bowick was supported by Cr. Julian for several mbtlons in respect to engineering works in the Tangitu riding relating to further works on the Takiri Road, and also the requisition of the grader for use in the riding as far as funds permitted.
