HAWERA SHOW.

THE OPENING DAY. GREAT DISPLAY OF STOCK. LIST OF AWARDS. Tlie Egmont A. and £. Association was favored with splendid weather conditions yesterday for the opening day of their thirty-eighth annual show, at Hawera. The show is a splendid one, and given good weather to-day there should ibe splendid attendances. Dairy cattle, as behoves a district devoted to dairying, form a very strong class.. Horses and pigs are numerous, but sheep are not, as strong as usual. Trade displays are.well up to.the usual standard, . whilst sideshows are very numerous,, and some.of them are of exceptional, merit. .. Farmers of the district have responded well with entries. ... arrangements for the show were splendid. The..stewards all worked well, with, the result that the awards came forward early, and good work was done by Mr.’ A. L. Campbell, the Press steward. Mr. M. C. Aighton, the capable secretary,-.had complete arrangements made, and Mr. McCay rendering valuable assistance. The catering was in the hands of Dustifs, Ltd., and was up to their high standard. The trade exhibitions are varied and interesting. Agricultural and dairying implements and machinery are strongly represented, a display of agricultural implements by Bennett and Sutton being prominent. Motor cars, lorries and cycles of many makes are in evidence, the latest in cars being a prominent feature of the display. All the side-shows familiar to show grounds are in evidence, a number of them being most attractive. Among these Bosco’s snake-charming is of particular interest. The confidence with which this man handles the crowds and shouts them spellbound with his stories is of great interest to the public. The snakes in >his collection are very fine and the show is of considerable educational value. The Maori Wonderland and a display of strange Australians, does not fail to attract the public. Many other side-exhibits alone make the show worth attending. The one hundred guinea cup, donated by Lovell and Christmas, to the winner of the most points in the Jersey class was won by Mr. A. A. Ward, of Tariki. This cup now becomes the property of Mr. Ward, he having annexed it three times in succession.

QUALITY OF THE STOCK. THE JUDGES’ REMARKS. Referring to the exhibition of Ayrshire cattle, the judge, Mr. C. B. Morgan, of Woodville, said the champion cow was as fine an animal as he had seen any where in the North Island. The females as a whole were a very highclass lot. The display proved that the Ayrshire breed was improving by leaps and bounds. The champion bull was an exceptionally good one, but was difficult to separate from the reserve champion. The yearlings were also a fine lot. Of the Jerseys, the judge, Mr. E. Eagle, Carterton, said they were a very fine class. The first and second cows had great udders, and showed constitution. They were cows of which any breeder might feel proud. The chief fault he had to find with the cows was that they were not well hung at the back of the udders. 'The winning three-year-old bull was a good one; indeed, all the placed bulls were very fine. The yearling class was strong. The class of Friesians, said the judge, Mr. H. Burgess, of Rongotea, was of a good dairying type, but was generally lacking jn condition. The winner in the aged .bull class was a fine animal, but was really too old for show purposes. The three-year-old and yearling winners were also good animals. He considered Mr. Johnson’s yearling was the ■best female animal in the show, and that it should develop into a first-class cow. The lack of condition and size was the worst feature of this class. The judge of the Milking Shorthorns, Mr. A. D. Bell, Clevedon, said the entry was smafi, and apart from the placed cattle was not very strong. The champion bull was an exceptionally fine animal, showing great quality and substance. The champion cow was also a classy, clean-cut animal of good dairying quality. Some of the unplaced animals were not really of show type. The entry of sheep showed slight decline over the previous, show, but the pig classes were strong.
