THUMBNAIL PICTURES. Mr. H. D. Swan, manager of the English cricketers, in an interview at Fremantle, gave a thumbnail picture of the capabilities of the various members, all of whom, with the exception of the veteran MacLaren, will be new to Australian cricket. A. P. F. Chapman, aged 22 years, a brilliant stylish left-hander, and one of the world’s six best fieldsmen; a good slow bowler. W. Tyldesley, a bowler with great possibilities under Australian conditions; fair bat, good fieldsman. C. H. Gibson, aged 24 years, excellent me-dium-paced bowler. C. H. Titchmarsh, first-class bat, forceful style. J. C. Hartley, aged 45 years, right-hand slow howler; depends mainly on length; a good bat. A. C. Wilkinson, dashing bat, capable of making tall scores in a short time. W. W. Hill-Wood, right-hand batsman and bowler; sound defence; ugly style, difficult wicket to take. G. L. Wilson, young amateur, sound bat, grand fieldsman. F. S. S. Calthorpe, best all-round cricketer in the team. I A. F. Brand, aged 20 years, attractive righthand bat, useful medium-paced bowler. I A. P. Freeman, aged 30 years, best googly I bowler in England ; took 200 wickets this year; fieldsman. .1. F. Maclean, aged 24 years, wicketkeeper, powerful, hard-hitting batsmian. T. C. Lowrie, another brilliant hitter, second-wicketkeeper. He is a New Zealander by birth. Mr. A. C. MacLaren. said the mainstay of the team wete .seven University Blues, whose youthful ability’ was unquestionable. He looked to them to provide good games, with high scoring. Despite criticism to the contrary, the team was strong in bowling. He regarded Clem Gibson as England’s best trundler, and the best batsmen of Australia would have to play hard to earn their runs. He would be satisfied with the tour if it brought on one or two of the young amateurs, sufficiently to warrant their inclusion In an English eleven. The team possessed uo stone-wallers, and were keen to play free, enterprising cricket. He 1 honed to beat at least one State eleven, and I even extend such high-class crlckters as Mew South Wales possessed. i It is 20 years since Mr. MacLaren tisitea Australia, tbe scene of many of his greatsst Wickftlnfi triumphs.
