A PORT RECORD.

BIGGEST BOAT BERTHED. DIRECT CARGO .LANDED. The arrival of the *C. and D. liner Port Denison at New Plymouth yesterday is interesting in several ways, for besides bringing-over 1000 tons of direct English cargo, the vessel is the biggest and the longest liner yet berthed at the port. Her gross tonnage „is given as 10,344, while the length of the vessel is four inches over 500 feet, and she is 60ft. 4in. wide.

The vessel was boarded by the harbormaster at 5.30 yesterday mornihg and berthed at 6.30, her draught on entering port being 14ft. 7in. fore and 18ft. 9in. aft. The Port Denison is a comparatively new vessel, having been built in 1918 by Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., Ltd., of Belfast. Capt E. G. Hutchinson is in command and, in addition to tMe officers, associated with him (as previously published) there are four cadets on board.

The vessel left London on September 22, making the trip to Dunedin direct in 30 days. After discharging her general cargo, which includes consignments for importers in various parts of Taranaki, the vessel will load approximately 34,000 boxes of butter and 5000 crates of cheese from the Moturoa stores; 3000 freight carcases of meat from the Waitara and Patea works, besides smaller quantities of tallow, wool, and 20 tons of machinery. Discharging operations were commenced at 8 a.m. yesterday and it will probably be Monday before she clears port. From New Plymouth the Port Denison proceeds to Wanganui, Wellington, Napier and Auckland in continuation of her Homeward loading, being due to leave the Tatter port for London, via Monte Video and Teneriffe, on December 10.
