Mr. P. J. Petersen, of Waitara, left by the mail train on Monday morning to judge the Jersey sections at the Te Arolia show. The Marquis Conyngham has married Mrs. Antoinette. Constance (says a London cable). Mr. Rudyard Kipling lias been elected Rector of »St. Andrew’s University. He polled 240 votes against 131 for Lord. UMswater. 'The death occurred at Motumaoho, Waikato, this week of Mr. James Jones, aged 80 years, one of New Zealand's oldeist-lborn settlers. The deceaseds mother, Mrs. Ann Barrow, was the first white woman to land in Wellington from the ship Aurora. Mr. Jones was a carrier operating between Wellington and Otaki when the country was in a virgin state. In 1871 he married a daughter of Captain James Taylor, of Tawa Flat. He followed farming, butchering, and goldmining, and eventually took up land at Motumaoho nine years ago. He leaves a widow and nine children and 15 grandchildren. The late Mr. Jones and his wife celebrated their golden wedding last year.
