FOOD AND THE STRIKE.

POSITION IN NEW PLYMOUTH. FLOUR IN SHORT SUPPLY. The shipping trouble is adversely affecting the supply of flour at New Plymouth, and already a serious shortage is threatened. Some bakers are reported to have fairly large stocks, but others have very little and expect to be right out by the end of the week. The position, however, may be eased if consignments can be had by rail, though it is doubtful whether Auckland and Wellington merchants will allow their stocks to be depleted for the purpose of satisfying the requirements of other districts. The Waihemo is due at New Plymouth from San Francisco, via Auckland, on Monday, and, as she is not affected by the strike, it is possible sha may bring some flour from Auckland. r flle merchants, too, are hoping to arrange a consignment from Lyttelton by the .Calm, via Wanganui, early in the coming week, and if they are successful the flour will be railed through to New Plymouth from the latter port. A large quantity of flour for New Plymouth is on the Kahika at Wellington, and if the merchants are successful in their endeavors to have it discharged and sent up by rail, the shortage will be materially eased. It is stated sugar is still in good supply. A consignment arrived from Auckland by rail yesterday. Smokers of the pipe and cigarette need not be alarmed at any prospect of not being able to secure tobacco, as apart from the fact that the majority of the New Plymouth retailers have ample stocks on hand, supplies can always be obtained by rail.
