Humphrey, Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with him. THE MARDI GRAS. November 11. At the conclusion of the Premier's speech at Strafford last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) announced that Mr. Massey had been elected a member of the Ugly Men’s Association, a movement in connection with thp Mardi Grat; Carnival. “And I have paid, my subscription and nominated another i-gly man!’' smilingly replied Mr. Massey. To-day’s count of the votes effected another change in the queen candidates’ •positions, the order now being:—Mies Linda Walsh (A.S.A.) 1, Miss Eileen Kelly (B.B.) 2, Miss Lulu Nash (Sports) 3, Mise Loi Ki veil (Country) 4. With well sustained interest and enthusiasm the various Mardi Gras committees have mapped out a comprehensive programme of events which promise to make the remaining three weeks of the carnival lively. On Monday night the 8.8. entertainers hold a concert at Midhirst in the interests o'f the country candidate, Miss Loi Kivell. The Sports’ big boxing night on Tuesday is causing much interest, the Bowlers' dance for the same candidate on Wednesday night should be a successful event. On Thursday night the A.S.A. committee hold a children’s fancy dress ball in the Town ‘Hall. THE KING’S THEATRE. “THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE.” Probably the strongest and roost distinguished. cast ever assembled for any picture in* the history of the screen, is seen in the Rex Ingram production for the Metro of “Tho Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” adapted by June Mathais from the world-famous novel by A’incentc Blasco Ibanez, which will be screened at the King’s Theatre, on Monday only. There are twenty-five principal roles, and in all 12,500 people make up the complete cast. The fame of “Tho Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” since it was first shown on the*' screen in Australasia has sped so quickly that the mere mention of the name is sufficient inducement and guarantee that all who go to the theatre are going to see the greatest picture that the world has ever known. There will be a special matinee, on-Monday afternoon, commencing at 2.30 for school children, who will be admitted for sixpence. In the evening a full orchestra will play a special musical score which travels with the picture. On Friday afternoon Mr. C. E. Bellringer, the Rev. L. B. Neale and Mr. J. H. Thompson, on behalf of the New Zealand Alliance, visited the ’Stratford Primary School to present the prizes recently, won by a number of pupils in the essay competition on the Education Department’s No. 13 circular. Mr. Bellringer, in making the presentation, heartily congratulated the prize-winners on ths good work they had done, and said he hoped to hear’ of their further successes. Mr. Neale spoke on similar lines. Mr. L. J. Furrie. headmaster, mentioned that Marion Steven, winner in section B was probably the youngest competitor in the competition in New Zealand, she being only nine years of age. Tho residents of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffanpy’s, Broadway.
