NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire.—Special' to News.) Christchurch, Nov. 11. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was concluded to-day in threatening conditions. Light rain set in just before the first race, but after a couple of hours the sky cleared again. The attendance was not so large as earlier in the week, many visitors having gone home. Proceedings opened with the Suburban Hurdles, and the scratching of Headlong left a field of eleven. Cerebus, Mazama and Black Art were fancied. Strayshot, Grange, Cerebus and Black Art. raced In that order for a mile, when Cerebus went on and strolled home with ridiculous case from Black Art, with Sir Fanciful finishing fast in third place and Rowan next. Cerebus is Improving with every race over hurdles, and now looks like making a a good one. There were thirteen starters for the Cressj’ Welter Handicap, Little River, Passionless and Battle Scene being the popular fancies. Listening Post, Moorland and Little River led for half the distance, when Moorland retired. Passionless came with a rattle from the distance, but Listening Post was said to be unlucky in the Stewarts’ Handicap. This performance showed that we did not see the best of him in tn at race. Passionless began slowly or he would have won. Little River had every chance, but was stopping at the end. Mustard Pot will win very soon. A lick 1 , of 19 hacks lined up for the Seymour Handicap. Danger Zone, Santiago and Lovesign being well backed. Lovesign was left at the post. Petunia and Uleaborg made the early pace, with Dame Straitlace and Bonibrvck prominent among the others. The field closed up at the distance, where Santiago and Bosker Boy looker dangerous. Then Danger Zeno came on the scene and won comfortably, with Santiago and Bosker Boy In the places, and Kaotane, Pantier and Bonibrook next. The performance of Danger Zone was a smart one. The scratching of The Hawk and Deucalion left a l3 for the Members’ Handicap. Sunny Loch, Songbird, Anomaly, Grotesque, and Limelight were fancied. Bon Spec was soon out in front, with Sunny Loch, Chimera, Songbird, Vespucci and Economist prominent in the next bunch. Anomaly moved up In the straight, but was shut in at the distance, where Sunny Loch and Songbird were going well. Then Limelight came with a rattle and won decisively by a length. Songbird being nearly a length in front of Sunny Loch, with Mantua, Economist, Anomaly, Vespucci and Chimera close up. Limelight is a slow begin- ] ner but a great galloper once she is within her stride. Her connections did not fancy her for this race on account of the greasy ground.
11k Pioneer Handicap attracted a very poor field, the scratching of Razzle Dazzle, who was sore after Wednesday’s race, leaving only four starters. Sir George Clifford's, bracket, Top Score and Owlscombe, was fancied. Avonlea raced for two furlongs alongside Top Score, who then went, on alone and won easily by about four lengths, Avonlea being three lengths in front of Parody, who beat Owlscombe by a head. The winner’s performance was attractive, but it could not be called a strong field. There were nine starters for the Stead Memorial Gold Cup, including last year's winner. Winning Hit, and a quartet of three-year-olds. Winning Hit, The Hawk and Gasbag were fancied. The Hawk, Gold Light and Zouave showed the way for three furlongs, where the first-named pair went on from Zouave, Many Kittle and Winning Hit. At the six furlongs post Many Kittle joined the leaders, and a little further on The Hawk retired, while Gohl Light was done with at the home turn. Many Kittle led Winning Hit to the straight, and just when people were calling the name of the Autumnlus horse his rider drew his whip. In the meantime Many Kittle was striding along in front, and he won easily by three lengths, Gasbag coming with a late run to beat Winning Hit by four lengths. Tre.ssayr, Trespass and Zouave were next, with The Hawk last. No excuses could be made for the beaten horses. It was a good performance on the part of Many Kittle, but it rather complicates the three-year-old form, which\ looks difficult to follow. Winning Hit stopped in disappointing fashion, while the display of The Hawk was shockingly bad. The five acceptors lined up for the Juvenile Plate. They had not gone far before Epitaph was out clear, and she was never troubled. Tukia threw out a challenge at the distance, but Epitaph beat her comfortably by three lengths. Wild Hind, who got out slowly, was five lengths away, with Veil next. The performance showed that Epitaph retains her brilliancy, but the race did not make the two-year-old form look good. The curtain was rung down on the meeting with the running of the Fendalton Handicap, for which the field numbered eleven. Deucalion, King's Trumpeter and Enthusiasm were the popular fancies. Printemps and Silent King made most of the running, Cupidon, Enthusiasm. Angelo and Bonnie Heather following them to the straight. Cupidon looked a winner below the distance, where King’s Trumpeter joined in, and, drawing away from Enthusiasm, King’s Trumpeter won by a length, while Cupidon stopped, Bonnie Heather beating him by a head. Then came Deucalion and Bonetter,, with the rest of the field well back. The winner anil* runner-up are three-year-olds, and apparently there are some good ones of that age about. Cupidon was a disappointment, as he failed over the last furlong.
Some of the visiting trainers left for their homes after Wednesday’s racing, but there are about 50 North Island horses here yet, and they will have to remain until the shipping Knnhj® is
