The Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Averill), in continuation of his tour of the Taranaki portion of his diocese, will go to Inglewood to-morrow, and will preach there on Sunday morning.
Mr. T. E. Corkill, chief inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of his late brother.
The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Edwin Parrott, of New Plymouth, and formerly of Eltham. He was 51 years of age. A London cablegram says that the Royal Society has awarded the Cempley Medal to Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford for researches in atomic structure. Sir Maui Pomare, who has been conducting a .political campaign in Taranaki, left Hawera by the mail train yesterday morning for Ratana, where he will attend the funeral of the late chief, Utiku Potaka, who was one of his strong supporters. One of the old school of Maoris, Utiku Potaka, paramount chief of the Ngati Haiuti, died at Rata on Saturday. His age was uncertain, but it was believed he was 103 years of age, for, according to Native Land Records, he, as a youth, took part in the intertribal fight at Toitoi in 1832. The deceased was a large holder of property near the Main Trunk line. The late chief was married three times.
On Tuesday there passed away a well known resident, Miss -S. P. King, who was a native of New Plymouth. Miss King was a daughter of the late Mr. and 'Mrs. W. R. King, and a sister of Miss T. A. King, Mrs. M. Jones, and also of the late Mrs. W. T. Oxenham, Mrs. E. Veale and Mrs. W. A. Collis. She was of a cheerful though retiring disposition, with a kindly sympathetic heart, and will be missed by a large circle of friends. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. W. J. Elliott, of Whitely Church.
