A lorquaia colt was bought by Mr. Jefferd for 675 guineas, a Lady Lucy colt, by Mr. H. Nathan, for 525 guineas. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Mr. .T. E. Henrys had good reason to feel proud as to the result, of his handicapping on Wednesday at Riccarton; a dend-heat In the Jockey Club Handicap, and head and neck finishes in minor handicap events, showing that the old hand has not -lost its cunning. In addition, a dead-heat in the Oaks, and a bare length victory Ln the Canterbury Cup kept punters in a state of excitement. Gasbag’s success in the Canterbury Cup is the third successive win for a son of Demosthenes —a notable acehievement. The dead-heat in the Oaks was the first in the history of the race-and it dates back to 1887. Most T>?ople were surprised at the slumn In tote figures nt the Auckland spring mooting, the aggregate of £117.788 10s representing a decrease of £26.182 10s on the turnover for the same gathering Inst year. However, it must be remembered that, when other racing clubs were faced with alarming totalisator decreases. the Auckland club maintained its position wonderfully well, and now—when other clubs are on the up-grade again—they have a long way to go before thev regain their nrosnerltv of, say, five or six v Pa rs ago, while Auckland flcures are even this year much ahead of those of normal, prosperous times. Our Auckland confreres are in a sound, healthy position, and a little economy on the pnrt nf the betting public is certainly warranted.
Winners wore no easier to pick at Ellerslie on Monday than they were on the opening day, only nne favorite scoring, and that was an odds-on bet, Oroflnn. The Indian sign seemed to hang over everything which the public sorted out, Just Quietly being hadly left; Boyal Abbey narrowly beaten in a clashing finish; Lady Ridicule getting a bad start; Royal Present being hung up In the tapes, and nrnetioallv taking no part In his race; Signature fencing indifferently in the Steeples: and Illumination, the medium of a solid plunge in the Recovery Stakes, being beaten in the last stride by Geoffrey.
As on the first day, Sheffield tried tn winall the way in the Gordon Handicap, but at the finish Master O’Rorke, in receipt of 17 ib had too much left in him, and won by less than a length. The 'winner Is another of the Day Comet breed, which c.amo under notice when Matinee upset the favorite. Highland, in the Guineas on Saturday. Autumn Rose, the dam of Master O’Rorke. was bred by Mr. ,T. Lennard, who also bred Master O’Rorke. Autumn Rose is hy Soult—Alba Rose, by Seaton Delaval—Vieux Rose, by Hippocampus— Rosarina, by Traducer.
Royal Abbey, Hyginas and Guerre a Mort carried the bulk of the money in the Manuka u Hurdles, hut Taranaki horses, Kato and Banogue. filled the principal places. Royal Abbey made the running for a mile, but through a bad jump lost his position. Banogue then went to the front, and at the last fence Banogue, Royal Abbey, Kato and Paddington Green were all in the picture. A fine race home resulted in favor of Kato, who was splendidly ridden by N. McDonell, but there was little between the quartette as they passed the judge’s box. Miss Melvn fell. Although Dovelet had run such a brilliant race the first day the public discarded her in the Epsom Handicap, and went solidly for Lady Ridicule. Killa-Shandra and Tanm-a-roa. Golden Bubble was prominent in the early stages, but Doveiet dashed up on the fence Inside the distance, and just won from Bretland. who was galloping over everything nt the finish. The winner paid a little over “the limit.” Highland was nicely treated in the King Edward Handicap with 7.9, and led from end to end, stalling off Income’s game challenge in the final stages. As on the first day, Insurrection was finishing very fast? and puntcfs should make a mental note of him for the Auckland Cup. Royal Present, as stated above, fouled the starting barrier, and merely trotted after the field. Pittsworth’s failure on Saturday caused punters to drop him in the Onehunga Steeples, but. Mr. J. Williamson’s luck was in on money from Director, and Caress (whose form at the meeting was disappointing) finished fourth. Hallgan (S. Anderson) tried to win the Normanby Handicap from harrier rise, and had such a clear led entering the straight that his supporters appeared to be on velvet. The last, furlong of a solidly-run mile found him weakening, and Lord Star (Lord MultifidUranium) won nicely at the finish. Fingoland set a merry pace in the Liverpool Welter, hut the favorite. Illumination, was never far away, and assuming command at the distance, looked a certain winner, but Geoffrey dashed up at the finish and just gave the judge enough to decide upon. Both first and second horses are owned by brothers the Alisons, and their keen rivalry was refreshing and sportsmanlike. The principal winning owners at the meet--Ins were: B. Andrews EISOO, F Davw £l4OO, G W. Vercon £lOOO, Eliot IS. Davis _£ TOO. K, Earl esso, E. W. Alison. Junr., £450. Caaw and Kina £4OO, A. N. Gibbons £4»O, H. I ,T. Graham £450, ,T. Willlaiaison £450, It. Hannon £4OO. and W. J. Wilson £4OO.
