WANGANUI SHOW.
GOOD EXHIBITS OF STOCK.
LIST OF AWARDS. The Wanganui show was opened yesterday under fine weather conditions on the Wanganui racecourse, and for a first day the attendance was quite up to expectations. To a visitor from TaranaK., which is essentially a dairying district, the display of dairy cattle, that is pedigree, is somewhat disappointing, though it is better than at the last show at Wanganui. In fat cattle and sheep there is a great showing. In Shorthorns IV. J. Cooper was the only exhibitor. G. A. Turner (Eltham) had entered several bulls, but they were not shown. There was also good competition in Aberdeen Angus. In Herefords, G. P. Moore was again the principal winner, and again wins the two handsome trophies, one valued at 25 gns, for the best bull, and the other at 50gns -for most points. In Friesians, only six animals were penned. Mr. H. J. Marchant (Stratford), who judged, spoke highly of R. A. "Wilson’s yearling bull, which also won at Palmerston North. The champion cow was a nice type of animal, but suffered through being out of condition, and her age was against her. In the Ayrshires, W. P. Harre took both championships. The Moumahaki State Farm also scored in this section. In Jerseys. Mrs. C. Hodder’s Spracie took the championship. The classes were not particularly strong, though some fair animals were shown. The judge (Mr. R. J. Linn) said that lie would like to have seen more competition. He thought that it was not jn the best interests of the, society or of breeders that grades should be allowed to compete at the show; it should be confined to pedigrees. If this were done he felt assured there would be much greater support from Taranaki breeders. Milking Shorthorns were one of the strongest classes at the show. The judge’ Mr. J. C. Wright (Matapu), considered. that the champion and reserve champion bull were fit, to show in any ring. The young bulls also were very fair. The champion cow was a fine type. The crossbred and grade section was numerically the strongest in the show.
Pigs were not numerically strong, but some splendid quality was exhibited. Bowen and Wilson (Hastings) scored heavily, particularly in Tamworths. Tn sheep. D. Ross was the only cx'hibitor in Lincolns: T. X). Haycock and Fernie Bros, in Corriedales: the Moumahaki Experimental Farm in Rveianas; D. Ross. J. I*. Howitt and Blair and Hunter in Romney Marsh: J. Knight. Burrell and Sons, and R. Bremer .n ( Southdown. In the farmers’ classes R. ; Farley and Ferric Bros, showed Rom- ! neys and R. Fail-'y Lintfblns. Fat sheen ; drew good competition, Bruce Bros.. G. | H. Handley. R. Farley and Fernie Bros. 1 being the principal exhibitors. ; In the horse section there was good ! 'competition, particularly in the hacks, ; farmers’ horses, and panics. The arrangements for the show are ' good, everything going off smoothly under the capable organ'sation\ of the secretarv (Mr. F. G. Seddon) and h’s band of officials. * To-day will be People’s Dayi, and as there are delayed trains nortdi and south there should be a good attendance. ! The prize list is as follows: —’■ HORSES.
