CONVICTED OF FALSE PRETENCE. By Te’egraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. S. After a hearing extending over four days the trial of Maurice Tangney on a charge of attempting to obtain a sum of £5OO from Detective Tongue by means of a false pretence came to a*' ’close at the Supreme Court, to-day. i Mr. Justice Reed, in summing up, ' expressed regret at the length of the ease, which should have lasted only a j quarter of the time. It was the duty of the police to protect people against. ' themselves and against such people as prisoner who, by means of an advert isej ment in the newspapers, attempted to I catch the small man's money. After an ■hour's deliberation the jury returned a verdict of guilty and prisoner was remanded till Friday for sentence. On hearing the verdict, prisoner exclaimed, j "I appeal against the conviction.”
