DUNEDIN SESSIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, November 7. The criminal sittings opened' before Sir Robert Stout. The following prisoners pleaded guilty and were remanded for sentence: Frederick John Wood, an elderly man, charged with Indecent assault: James David Deans, a postal officer, charged with theft, of a postal packet; Alexander Christie Bennett, five charges of breaking and entering. PALMERSTON NORTH SESSIONS. Palmerston N. November 7. The ise-ssions of the Supreme Court opened to-day before Mr. Justice Salmond. True bills were returned on the total criminal calendar against five persons. ’SENTENCE FOR ARSON. Christchurch, Nov. 6. James Walkington Smythe, on a charge of arson at Kaikoura in May last, was sentenced by Mr. Justice Adams to five years’ hard labor and declared a habitual criminal. Hrs .previous convictions consisted mostly of false pretences and forgery dating back to 1911. Sentence had been deferred pending the decision of the Court of Appeal on the admissibility of evidence tendered at the trial. The Appeal Court unanimously upheld the conviction.
