NOTES ON THE RACING. MORE INTERESTING CONTESTS. (By Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s nieeting was continued to-day in fine weather. Following on heavy rain overnight the track dried up well and was in good order. The racing was much more interesting than on the first day, there being some exciting contests. The opening event, the Middleton Hurdles Handicap, drew a field of ten, representing fair hack form. Black Art made the pace, but a bad jump six furlongs from home enabled Sir Fanciful, Rowan and Olynthus to join her. These four were in a bunch at the last hurdle, but Black Art finished well on the fiat and beat Sir Fanciful by over a length, with Rowan and Olynthus close up. Black Art will win lots of good races when he learns to jump as well as his brother, Manawapango. The scratching of Maioha t Sunny Loch, Limelight and Passionless fcft a field of twelve for the Criterion Handicap. Glentruin Was fancied, with Scrimmage and Anomaly the best, hacked of the others. Rational led for two furlongs, when Songbird and Lovesign took charge. There was a big hunch together at the entrance to the straight. Glentruin first headed them at the distance, and lasted long enough to stall off Anomaly’s late run. Martian Miss came from second to last to get third money. Rational was fourth, running it out. well, and then camo Songbird. Listening Post and Grotesque in a bunch. Royal Mac also showed up at the distance, and then faded out. Scrimmage was badly left, and never had a chance. Glentruin',s performance was high-class, and it, is hard to say where she Will stop. Murihaupo was withdrawn from the Irwell Handicap, leaving eleven runners. Razzle Dazzle and Tukia showed the way to the course broper, with Avonlea and Owlscombe handy. Razzle Dazzle had Tukia’s measure at the distance, and won by a length. Owlscombe finished well and just failed to catch TuKia. Then camo Avonlea, who was tiring, with Parody and Luclnette next, both finishing well. The winner is a sister to Affectation and a half sister to Gold Light, who won on Saturday. She is a very promising youngster. Tukia got a bump from the winner three furlongs from home, hut after an inquiry it was decided to take no action. It seamed a just decision, as Tukia’s rider probably contributed to the trouble through trying to get through where there was no room.

Veil and Kahikatca were withdrawn from the Derby, leaving five to contest the classic race. King’s Trumpeter was fancied, while there was also support for Enthusiasm and Tressayr. As a test, of merit over a mile and a half it was one of the poorest contests I have ever witnessed. Tressayr was first out, but was soon headed by King’s Trumpeter, whose rider was looking round for someone else to take the lead. Mans’ Kittle took charge after going two furlongs, and reached the mile post six lengths in front, in 57 4.-ssec. At this stage Enthusiasm moved into second place. The pace improved a bit in the second halfmile, which was run in 54 l-ssec., but it was not till half a mile from home that they got to work In earnest. Many Kittle led to the straight, but Enthusiasm had his measure at the distance and won nicelj- by a length. King’s Trumpeter came with a rattle in the last furlong, but Many Kittle beat, him by a head. Tressayr was last. It was a muddling race, in which R. Reed, the rider of King’s Trumpeter, did not. add to ills reputation as a good horseman. He might not, have won under any conditions, but he, did not give his mount, a chance. Enthusiasm was always going well after the first half-mile, and she finished up going very comfortably. The Hagley Handicap, a valuable 9-furloiig hack race, appearing on the programme for the| first time, attracted twenty starters. Limelight; was a popular choice. Kerb showed the. way. at the start, with Dame Straitlace and Boy next. Boadicea moved up at the end of three furlongs, and a little further on he was with Kerb in the lead. Boadicea was well clear below the distance, where Bumptious came with a late run and just failed by a head. Danger Zone finished well two lengths away, with Redlogue, Balesor and Santiago following in a bunch. The winner was one of the outsiders of the field, as she was when she scored at Ashburton earlier in the season. She is n. very useful mare. Limelight never looked dangerous. Royal Box was scratched for the Metropoli-, tan Handicap on account of soreness, and hO. will not race again at the meeting, thoughi there Is nothing serious amiss. In a field of thirteen Bonnie Winkie was fancied, with plenty of support for Muraahi. When the field) settled down Roseday was in front, but. at the; end of five furlongs Muraahi took charge, with. Roseday. Silent King, Cupition, Royal Star, Gasbag, and Bonnie Winkie- handy. Marqueteur only put in an, appearance in the straight,' and in a great, battle from the distance he! beat Bonnie Winkie by a head, Cupldon being a neck aw«w. with Bonnie Heather, Royal Star,

Trespass, Gasbag ami Kllgour close up. It was a very fine race. Marqueteur showed a vast improvement on his Cup form, while Cupidon had also been benefited by his two mile race. Muraahi was prominent to the straight, but failed to run on. A. H. Wilson, the ridcr of Roseday, had his license suspended till the end of November for disobedience at the starting post. Seventeen hacks lined up for. the Randolph Handicap, Eighteenpenee and Santonio being fancied. Eighteenpenee and Martis showed the way early, with Happy Warrior, Santonin and Uleaborg also prominent. Eighteenpenee retired at the end of three furlongs, and Martis was done with at the distance. Uleaborg then took charge, and stalling off a late run byi Wartime, ho won by half a length. Happy Warrior was a length away, with Osterman, Wink and Joy Ride close up. There war some trouble over Wartime’s weight. Her lead bag was dropped near the winning post, and after a lengthy inquiry Wartime was disqualified for the race. Happy Warrior being placed second and Osterman third. Tinihanga and Entre Nous fell. R. Reed, the rider of Tinihanga, got a nasty spill and was taken to the hospital. The concluding event, the Epsom HighWeight Handicap, attracted eight starters. Deucalion being in demand. Jazz jumped out in front and stayed there all the way, winning by four lengths from Deucalion, who beat Some Kid by two lengths. This pair was always prominent behind the leader, while Kaotanr, stopping a bit, was at the head of the others. Jazz is an uncertain customer, but when in the humor Im is a brilliant galloper. GLOAMING NOT FIT. Christchurch, Last Night. Gloaming is amiss, and can be looked upon as an unlikely starter at the meeting. AUCKLAND MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY’S RESULTS. HIGHLAND WINS BIG RACE. Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting concluded’ to-day in windy weather. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £50,000 10s, the total for the meeting being £117,788 10s, against £143,171 last year. Results: — GORDON HANDICAP—Master O’Rorke (Keesing) 1, Sheffield 2, Smoke Concert 3. King Ingoda did a mile in Imin. 45sec. The weather Is uncertain to-day. W. Johnstone will ride Molyneaux. THE VICTORIAN DERBY. Sydney, Nov. 6. The Herald says Cliffdale was mostly well abreast, of the field and had a margin of a length In his favour when a furlong from ’.he post, but Whittier then ran past, showing what a fine colt, he is. Ho simply came away as in an ordinary canter and broke the recon time established by Furious in 1921. Cliffdale excited surprise by ills excellent, showing Soorak finished eighth, and demonstrated that he is not a stayer. The Telegraph says Soorak lost several lengths at the start through jumping sideways and cannoning into Yanda. Whittier ran to the front below the distance and registered one of the easiest wins in connection with the race. Brown, Whittier’s jockey, described the race as the. easiest he had ever had. He knew Soorak was beaten a long way from home, but he never had any need to use his heels, let alone to call on Whittier to do his best. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The New Zealand Cup—so called—originated in 1883. and its winners are therefore well within the ken of tlie present decade of turf ; enthusiasts. Some very fine horses have had their names enrolled amongst, its winners, but no horse has won tile race move than once. Furthermore, the long and trying course has beaten all horses carrying more than 8.9. Chatting with Mr. "Sammy” Gibbons in ; Marton the other day, the writer was informed ' that Equitable and Murihaupo were both ox- { pected to run well at Rlccarton. Murihaupo, I by Sunny Lake—Equitas, is a half-brother to i Oratress and Equitable, and although owned ;by Mr. Gibbons, races in the colors of Mr. i P. D. .Tones, who holds him under lease. The Licensing Committee of the Racing Con- ' ference has withdrawn T. L. Reid's jockey’s ' license. Offenders get. It “in the neck” very promptly nowadays, so it, behoves horsemen to be on their best behavior, which Is as it should be.

"Jack” O'Shea’s many admirers will regret to hear that this capable rider is at present an. inmate of a sanatorium in the Waikato, .-md the state of his health is occasioning his friends great anxiety. Further particulars of the suspected "doping” case at Gisborne show that Persian King’s trainer was puzzled with the horse’s condition on the morning of the races, and on inquiry, was informed by a jockey that three men were noticed in the vicinity of the horse’s box ia auUr hours of the uacra-

ing, which was partly verified by tlie distinct footprints found on tlie spot. Prior to the race the matter was reported to the stipendiary steward, and the horse’s labored galloping: added further to the suspicions aroused. However, nothing definite will be known until the analyst’s report on the horse's saliva, etc., is received, but it is to be hoped that if foul play has been accomplished the offenders will be smartly brought to book. "Doping’’ of a mild stimulative nature, to increase, a horse’s speed, or induce a horse tn do its best in a race, may be adopted in New Zealand occasionally, but cases of doping to "stop” a horse are fortunately few.
