COMMUNITY CLUB.

THE FINAL EVENING. The New Plymouth Community Club held their final’ evening last night, when the senior cadets were entertained by a committee of ladies and members oi the Savage Club. Prior to the concert, Mr. A. Smith gave the cadets an interesting lecture on the Shetland Islands. Mr. Smith traced the history of the hardy Shetland inhabitants from early days enlarging upon their customs and. habits. The two chief means of livelihood were herring and whale fishing, which were carried on a great deal more extensively than many people imagined. The Shetland Islanders made the fine I of colonists, and wherever they had settled their industry and application had made successful settlements. Then presence was not unknown in New Zealand. 'At one time the whole, ot Banks Peninsula was occupied by settlers from the Scotch Hebrides. These northern islands were -beautiful spots in the summer time, a resort of tourists and holiday-makei’s. So far north were the Shetlands that in summer daylight lasted throughout the whole twentyfour hours. Photographs could be successfully taken at midnight and games indulged in all time. The visitors from the Savage Club provided an hour’s music, songs being rendered by Messrs. A. Brooker, C. H. Wyatt, C. 11. Weston, P. Fredrie, and A. Peeling Air. Wyatt also led the cadets in° a number of community son»s, which were enthusiastically taken up. After the concert a free supper was provided by ladies of the community chib. the hostesses being: Mesdames' E. Watorson (president), C. H. Weston, N. Brodie, D. K. Morrison, C. M. Le May, and Miss B. Ronton.
