INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
NEW PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT. For the quarter ended September 30 last four cases of infectious disease were notified within the Taranaki County, which was 6.25 per cent, of the total cases in the hospital district during the period. Of the cases notified three were diphtheria and one tuberculosis. The inspector of health (Air. F. Swindells) advised the County Council yesterday that the necessary precautions were observed in all cases, which, on a population basis, were at the rate of 0.8 per 1000’. This was the same rate as for the preceding quarter, and was very satisfactory for the county. During the quarter ended September 30, 36 cases of infectious disease were notified within the borough of New Plymouth, ■which was 57.82 of the total cases notified within the hospital district. Of the cases, 11 were scarlet fever, 13 diphtheria, 2 tuberculosis, 4 influenzal pneumonia, 4 pneumonia, 2 puerperal fever, and 1 lethargic encephalitis. Thirty-four of the cases were removed to the hospital for treatment. The inspector of health (Air. F. S. Swindells) stated in his report that it would be noted that the number of cases had increased over the previous quarter by 17, the bulk of the increase being during July. The weather conditions were then rather severe, there having been a prevalence of southeasterly winds, and the notifications were almost doubled, but with a return to more settled conditions the position became much easier. Taken on a population basis, the rate was 3.24 per 1000 of population, the increase being 1.58 per 1000 over the preceding quarter.
