EASTER ISLAND.

AND THE ROMANCE OF THE PACIFIC. Mr. Clement Wragge, F.R.G.S., Auckland, writes ae follows: — Sir, —Neither Professor MacMillan Brown nor anyone else will ever solve the- alleged mystery of Easter Island, with all the volumes of marvellous history that link up therewith with mere superficial investigation, and a process that is akin to a hen scratching on the surface for food for its chicks. The problem must be tackled deeply from the standpoints of astronomy, geology, animal geography, antique history, and the evidences of the rocke. Professor Brown must be prepared to admit the truth of the following: (1) The once existence of the old. continents of Lemuria and Atlantis.

(2) That the -poles of the earth may have been inverted more than once since the original zodiacal calculations in Egypt, quite apart from the precession of the equinoxes, and that the poles of the earth and the ecliptic formerly coincided.

(3) That much of the teaching of this little age has to be unlearned, and that La Place, for instance, will have to be corrected as Einstein may correct Newton. (4) That the dictum that “Nature never jumps” does not hold good throughout the. aeons of antiquity. (5) That cataclysms have surely occurred in vast ages past, consequent on a tilt of the earth’s axis caused By planetary, cometary or extraneous electromagnetic forces. Everywhere, from ancient floods and subsidences to upheavals, and seismic and oceanic tida'l waves, there are evidences of this fact, and the canyons of North America, the needle-like peaks of Tierra del Fuego, the upheaval of what was once an inland sea in Australia, the finding of Pteroeeras shells in Fiji (4000 feet above sea level), the Antarctic'coal measures, the remains of Arctic flora and fauna of tropical origin, and very many other instances in all parts of the world, very completely tell their ta’le to the man who can understand; in connection also with the revolution of the Poles, erosion and gradual elevation of land are quite minor factors. (6) That the Easter Island statues and original scripts are immensely ancient, and link up with monoliths, glyphs and megalithic remains in New Zealand, New Caledonia, Walpole Island, Malden Island, etc., the Carolines, Tonga, Tahiti, Central America, Africa, Hal Tarzien in Malta (let alone Stonehenge, etc.), Egypt, the statues of Barn ian, Gobi and others in Central Asia, and other such elsewhere, leading to the foundations of Hinduism, Zoroastnanism and Buddhism.

(7) That Sanscrit will give a clue to the Easter Island script.

(8). That the history of the original Maori can be traced through America and Northern Africa to North-west India. and that the Maori (since degenerated in stature from the giants of old) is Atlantean in origin.

(9) That .the Aztecs, who knew of the deluge ahd were connected with the ancient Egyptians, and the Incas that, pr Peruvian tradition says, “peopled the earth after the flood,’ are all interwoven in the amazing history. (10) That varying eccentricities of the earthorbit with the earth in aphelion or perihelion, combined with the secular revolution of the poles, precession as quite a secondary influence, and erratic displacement of axis from the causes before mentioned have to be reckoned with as prime factors, together with the geological and seismic results. On such depend all the migrations and development of early man. (11) That the‘double spiral found from Malta to Raglan, in connection with sun-worship, with the origin of the spiral, has an immense significance. (The very familiar spikes and balls on our houses go back to the same thing, pointing to the once vertical sun, and many an architect of this day knows nothing about it). On such lines must Professor Macmillan Brown pursue his researches if ho would solve the alleged mysteries, and on such linos only can the wonderful history of Easter Island and the Pacific generally, with the entire course of man on earth, be unfolded to the people of the so-called Twentieth Century. The reading of the megalithic track lies herein. It is all such a romance, stranger than any fiction, and volumes could be written; but enough for now. That my remarks will bo severely criticised is highly probable, but it does not matter the decimal of a scrap. Indeed, there is no religion higher than Truth.
