(By "Moturoa.”) Turf patrons will have much to Interest them during the next week. To-morrow will see me onnniug of the Canterbury .I.C. metropolitan meeting at Ricearton; the Auckland Raring •Club’s spring meeting at Ellerslie; and the Victorian Racing Club’s spring carnival at Flemington. In addition there will be the Canterbury Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington, and—at the end of next week—races at Hamilton. The .Canterbury Jockey Club meeting extends over four days, commencing on Saturday, when the principal events to be decided arc the New Zealand Cup, Welcome Stakes and Stewards’ Handicap. On Monday the New Zealand Derby will be run, ar well ns the
Metropolitan and Criterion Handicaps. Wednesday will be Oaks Day, with substantial "packing” in the nature of the Canterbury Cup and Jockey Club Hanricap. The gathering concludes on the following Saturday, when the Stead Memorial Cup, the Members’ Handicap, and the Juvenile Plate will be the principal attractions. The Auckland spring meeting takes place on Saturday and Monday. On the opening day the principal races are the Mitchelson Cup, Great Northern Guineas, and Welcome Stakes, while on Monday chief interest will be centred upon the King Edward Handicap, Musket Stakes, and Onehunga Steeplechase. Saturday will be Derby Day at Flemington, and the Melbourne Cup will follow on Tuesday-. Good Sport, who got amongst the winners at Gisborne, is a three-year-old colt by the defunct Polydamon (imp.) from Amusement, the daun of Chortle and Chuckle (both by Multifid), and Fife and Drum fend Camouflage (both by Heather Mixture). Merniin (Absurd —Sea Elf) again let his party down badly at Caulfield, and it looks as if the Aussie sportsman, who paid 3000 guineas for the crack two-year-old of a couple of seasons back, has been caught with the rtnlch-fained Yankee “gold brick.” Encouraged by the success which has attended Mr. W. J. Tomklnson’s advent with a team of Aussie harness horses, several others are likely to come across with good horses for the spring and summer meetings. Amongst the number is Mr. P. Riddle, 'Stralia's premier reihsman. He is bringing five horses, and has booked accommodation at Mr. Jack Shaw’s, at Ellerslie. New Zealand trotting enthusiasts will have to "buck up” unless the} - want to see the “plums” plucked by the outsiders. The A.R.C. Welcome Stakes will bring together some speedy youngsters, amongst the number being Deluge, Homage, Queens March, Orofino, Mural and Caress, and the Issue looks open. Caress, by Martian—Trichas, a full sister to Quest, Is said to be very Slick, and may upset the calculations of those who consider that, the finish will be between Queens March and the elect of Mr. Geo. Currie's pair, which will probably be Deluge. The much travelled Loyal Irish Is said to have made a good recovery from his attack of laryngitis, and will be shipped back to Auckland shortly. Mr. Jas. Bull’s Ruddy has been "tubed,” and if the operation is successful he may stay better In future. There is no doubt about his ability to fly the small obstacles, but a mile and a half has been the length of his tether recently. Mr. P. Glasheen arrived in Auckland last week with four trotters. Including the chaunpion Grand Voyage, and Stormy Voyage. Hector Gray will be leaving England this month, and expects to be back In New Zealand before the Auckland Cup meeting. Gray has pleased his patrons In the Old, Dart, and Lady Cunliffe-Owen recently presented him with a £2OOO mptor-car. Gray is likely to settle down as a trainer in England, and his son (who is said to ride nicely) will shortly be seen under silk. Although Carbine’s total of stake winnings, £29,626, has z been passed by fturythmic and Gloaming, It must be remembered that stakes were all round smaller in “Old Jack’s” day. and a Sydney statistician has estimated that Carbine’s winnings on a present, day basis would touch £42,957. Eurythmlc'a defeat by Purser at. Caulfield Is generally conceded to have been brought about by Dempsey’s over-confidence. The Victorian champion was ridden too patiently, and when he sot out to cut. down Purser he just failed by a stride or two. Anyway, It was a cheerful turn-up for the bookmakers, from whom solid odds*on bettors had drawn a steady Income for some seasons. There are no certainties in racing, and the chief contributing factor Is the fallibility of saddle-sitters.
