WEATHER IN OCTOBER.

NEW PLYMOUTH CONDITIONS. The month of October has been very varied in its weather, according to the New Plymouth records. There was more rain than has been recorded since last March, and the falls were on several occasions heavy and accompanied by lightning and thunder. The temperature was considerably higher than during the last few months, and on only one occasion was a frost recorded. The higher temperature was largely due to the absence of the southeast wind which had been very persistent in the three preceding months. The sunshine record was good, though it fell a few hours short of that registered in September. Detailed results are as follow: The total rainfall was 7.19 in. and rain fell on 18 days, the heaviest of all being 1.48 in. on the 7th and 1.40 in. on the 12th. This brings the total rainfall for 1922 up to 44.12 in. In October 1921 the rainfall was 6.59 in. with 20 wet days and a maximum fall of 1.36 in. The mean maximum temperature was 62.2 d eg., and the minimum 49.9 deg., giving an average mean of 56deg. as against 50.8 deg. last month. The highest temperature recorded in the screen was Gs.ldeg., and the lowest 39.9 deg. The records for the exposed thermometers show-’d a moan of 1 24.2 deg. for the solar radi i ! >n with a maximum of 136 deg.: the mean temperature on the grass was 44.3 deg. with a minimum of 29.9 deg. The bright sunshine recorded was 199 hrs. 15min., with a maximum of 12hrs. lOmin. This compares with 207’hrs. 55min. last month, and 140 hrs. 25min. in October, 1921. The wind blew from all quarters, the record being. North 3 days, N.E. 4 E 4, S.E. 5, S 1, S.W. a. *W. 3, N.W* 6. Tn July, August and September there were 17, 14, and 18 days respectively on which the wind was from the south-east. There were strong winds on the 21st, 22nd, and 29th, and thunderstorms on the 13th and 30th.
