DISTRICT NEWS.
WHAREROA. (From Our Own Correspondent). On Friday evening a very successful concert was held in the Whareroa Hall to raise funds for the local Sunday School. The items rendered by the children reflected great credit on their teachers, and Misses Ritchie and Richdale are particularly deserving of praise for their untiring energy and time devoted to the training of the pupils. The first part of the concert consisted of a good programme of varied items, which was opened by a pianoforte duet by Mrs and Miss G. Benton, followed by songs by Miss Blake and Mr Steffert. and action songs by school children, dialogues and recitations by saime, and by B. Marra, and musical monologue by Mrs Benton, also instrumental trios by Misses Loader a .d Benton and Air Loader (piano, mandolin, and banjo). The second part of the evening was devoted to an operetta entitled “Red Riding Hood and The Blue Prince,” which was prettily staged and beautifully dressed. The part of “Red Riding Hood” was splendidly acted by Miss Mavis Death, while Miss Richdale made a charming Blue Prince, and Mrs W. Nicolas au ideal godmother. The other characters were: Fairy Queen, Miss Hicks; Yellow Prince, Miss E. Death; Red Prince, Miss Mullinger. The school children were divided into pretty little fairies and gypsies. The singing and music throughout was very good. Miss G. Benton presided at the piano as accompanist. The superintendent (Mrs W. Nicholas) and her helpers are to he warmly congratulated on the high standard of work they achieved. Mrs Marra, on behalf of all present, thanked the teachers for their splendid concert and for their patience in training the' pupils so well. During the supper Interval Mr West, ably led a community “sing,” which was much enjoyed. After an excellent supper the floor was cleared and dancing indulged in to music supplied by Mrs Benton (piano), Mr Murphy (violin). and Mr Loader (banjo). The Whareroa Social Hall Committee held its annual meeting of members In the hall on Monday evening, Mr Hicks presiding. The balance sheet was adopted. It showed a net profit of £2l Ils Id on the year’s working. Mr Luscombe moved and Mr Robertson seconded a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for providing refreshments for the past season, and also to Mrs Benton, the auditor. The new committee elected were: Messrs Hicks, Robertson, Reynolds, Nichols, Eustace, Davis, and Murphy; chairman, Mr Hicks, secretary, Mr Murphy; auditor, Mrs Benton. Spec?i’. credit is due to Messrs Nicholas and Eustace for the amount of time given in erecting a new stage, which will be found verv convenient in future for concerts. The local branch of the Farmers’ Uoion con-, tinue to hold very successful meetings ’ imonthly.
