ELECTRIC POWER.
EXTENSION TO THE COUNTRY. COSTS OF INSTALLATION. With the intention of helping residents in the country districts considering the installation of electricity, should the New Plymouth Borough Council’s power system be extended to their districts, the electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) has drawn up the following data concerning coats, amount of power available, etc. The electrical supply for domestic use will be alternating current supplied at a pressure of 230 volts, while the supply for motors, in the. case of stnall motors of 3 h.p. and under, will be singlc-nhase 230 volts, but for all motors above this size, 400 volts, three-phase. The supply authority will allow 60 feet from its main free of charge, but over this distance will be charged to the consumer. It will not run electric lines on private property, which must\be installed at the expense of the owner. It costs approximately 38s per chain ta run small service lines to supply small motors, lighting, heating, etc. It costs approximately £6 10a to install two lights; £lO to install four lights; £l3 for six lights; £l7 for e:ght lights; £2l for 10 lights; £23 for 12 lights. Heating costs approximately 50s per point to install, and a two-horse power motor approximately £5. In all the above instances, should the length of the service main to the installation be in excess of the lengths allowed free, the cost of such must be added. The cost per year of running a 2 h.p. motor is approximately £2l, and a 3 h.p. approximately £3l. It requires a 2 h.p. motor to drive the average milking plant. For domestic supply, lighting etc, a two-light installation will cost approximately £5 per year; 6 lights, £9 per year, and 10 lights, £l2 per year, etc.
