HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING 440 YARDS RECORD BROKEN. The New Plymouth Boys’ High School annual athletic meeting was held at the school grounds on Saturday. With an absence of a glaring sun, the weather was almost ideal and the numerous, well-contested events provided an interesting day both for competitors and visitors. The school has a name for running a good sports meeting, and its reputation lost nothing on Saturday. The grounds were well laid out, and, with the energetic officials, every event was got away well to time, while the tactful handling of the spectators enabled them to see the finish of every race without in any way interfering with the competitors. The sporting spirit displayed in all events was in keeping with the traditions of the school. The senior championship for the Old Boys’ Association cup was won by H. W. Brown, with 22 points, J. D. Mackay running him a close second with 21 points. The 120 yards hurdles was the deciding event. Brown just managing to get home in front of Rickard, and thus gaining the five points for a win which he required to put him in the lead. Brcwn also took the Old Boys' shield for the senior 440 yards, when he beat F. A. Bruce's 1913 record of 56 2-5 sec. by 1 1-5 sec. This was the only record broken at the meeting. In addition, he took Mr. Noakes’s cup for the 120 yards senior hurdles, and the Mason Memorial Cup for the senior 880 yards, his times being 18 2-5 sec. and 2 min. 12 sec., respectively. Brown’s other win in the championship events was the 100 yards (11 1-5 sec.), while he came third in the long and high jumps. Mackay gained his wins in the jumps, being placed second to Instill, who had not entered for the championship, in the long jump, with 18 ft. 11 in. from scratch, and second to Collins (who also had not entered) in the high jump, with 4 ft. 11 in. from scratch. He’ was second to Brown in the 440 and 880 yards, and third in the 100 yards and 120 yards hurdles. The junior champion was found in Gilmour, who won the junior 100, 440 and 880 yards, the next nearest to him being C. Tate, with 9Vi points, as against Gilmour’s 15. Gilmour also takes Mrs. Bothamley’s cup for the junior 440, which he covered in 60 seconds. The under 14 championship for Mr. J. Bennett’s cup proved a runaway for P. Grover, who annexed the winning place in the 75, 100, 220 and the fastest time in the steeplechase, the four championship events. For the steeplechase, he took Mr. Noakes’s cup. F. Grey was second with two seconds in the 75 and 220 yards. For Mr. C. Carter’s cup, for the under 12 championship, there was a close contest, between A. Washer, with 11 points, and J. Perry, with 10. Washer gained a lead by taking the 50 yards, running second to his rival in the 100 and 150 yards. H. Thomson took Mr. W. H. Moyes's cup for the under 10 championship by winning the four deciding events, H. Law running second in each.
E. G. Smith, who took the Bryce cup for the fastest time in the senior steeplechase, again gave a display of his staying and finishing powers in the senior mile, for Dr. E. F. Fookes’ cup. .Tillett (40 yards) held the lead in the second and third laps, Jackson Palmer (20 yards) and Smith (scratch) being close up as they entered on the fourth lap. The fourth saw the leaders in the same order, the remainder of the field being well strung out. Smith then took the lead for the final lap, running home a comfortable winner with easily 30 yards to spare from Mackay, who had held back, Jackson Palmer being a close third. His time was 5 min. 55 1-5 sec. The junior mile was won by L. Richardson. Under the impression that the fourth lap was the last, this young runner put tn a strong run, passing the tape about 50 yards ahead of the remainder of the field. However, he still had a lot of power left and won easily by about 50 yards, Knuckey and Slmcock dead heating for second place.
The Invitation race of 100 yards saw a close finish between M. Gray (Hawera Technical High School) and Brown (of the school), K. Elgar (New Plymouth Technical College) being a very close third. The old boys’ 100 yards, for Mr. Prldham’s cup, provided a great deal of amusement with their by-play at the starting post. Mr. L. B. Webster proved the winner. with Mr. F. N. Whitcombe second, the time being 11 sec.
