RUNNING OF A FAVORITE. MATTER IN HANDS OF POLICE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Oct. 28. Serious allegations were made at a meeting of stewards during the progress of the second day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting to-day. In the first race among the starters was Persian King, who, on the strength of wins on two previous days, was favorite. Persian King left the barrier with the field, but soon fell back last, and tailed the field the- whole distance.

After the race the stipendiary steward (Mr. A. Gordon) called W. D. Turnbull and A. J. MeFlinn, trainer and rider of the horse, before the stewards, and MeFlinn was asked to account for the failure in running. It was decided to have an analysis made of the horse’s saliva, and the matter is now in the hands of the police.
