THE SEAMEN’S AWARD.

PROTEST AGAINST PROVISIONS. PROPOSED ACTION BY SEAMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of seamen, held at Lyttelton this morning, Mr. T. W. Young, secretary of the Seamen’s Federation, explained the recent award of the Arbitration Court, after which a lengthy resolution was carried protesting against its provisions, on the grounds that the union’s case was an unanswerable refutation of the shipowners’ claim for a reduction of conditions and wages; that the highestpaid member of the union on board ship earns less under the award than the average shore worker; that the reduction gives New Zealand shipowners a material advantage over Australian-owned vessels; that the Court was not justified in reducing the working conditions, and that the preference and disputes committee clauses were farcical.

In conclusion, the motion urges that a referendum be taken on the question of withdrawing from the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and that steps be taken to bring about one Australasian union of seamen.
