CORRESPONDENCE.
DAIRY PRODUCE CONTROL. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I should judge from the tone of Mr. H. A. Hunt’s letter re the 'above in Wednesday’s Daily News that he is very much opposed to the passage of the Bill. lam very sorry after all that has 'been said and written in favour of the proposal that any producer should remain in opposition. However, differences of opinion serve a useful purpose and often bring out the weaknesses of a scheme. No doubt the evidence given before the Parliamcntry Committee will be turned to good account, and the result will be a Bill acceptable to the great majority of dairy farmers. I must thank Mr. Hunt for reminding me of my duty to the committee and my company, as I may have otherwise overlooked it. If the Bill becomes law and regulations are made on the lines already suggested the whole committee will stand for re-election by the dairy companies each year. Therefore 'every opportunity will be given for electing new representatives, if thought desirable.
Reference has been made to my actions in the past in connection with Taranaki County matters. On the subject mentioned I have no regrets, for my fight then was a protest against a gross injustice, that of carrying motor traffic on our roads from outside counties to New Plymouth without compensation. We failed in -our efforts and our ratepayer® have had to carry an extra burden on this account and will continue to do so until the Highways Board ultimately provides relief In the meantime the motor is gradually running the railway service out of business.
In connection with Smart Road, so far as I could the shareholders at the annual meeting, after hearing the whole position of affairs explained, did not share the views of Mr. Hunt, as at the close of proceeding® a vote of thanks was passed by them to the Chairman and Directors for services rendered, and also a vote of appreciation by the Directors to the shareholders for their sympathetic acceptance of the position.—l am etc., JOHN CONNETT. New Plymouth, October 25.
(This letter was written before the Bill fcas “talked out” by the House of Representatives, but was crowded out of yesterday’s issue.—Ed.].
