PARLIAMENT.
YESTERDAY’S SITTING. THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. EMPIRE EXHIBITION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Legislative Council met to-day at 2.30 p.m. In answer to Sir Thomas Mackenzie, the leader of the Council stated that the Government took immediate action when the newspapers announced the resignation of Mr. Robert Donald from the executive of the Empire Exhibition as a protest against the decision to obtain supplies of foodstuffs for the Empire Exhibition restaurant from without the Empire. The Government cabled to the High Commissioner stating that it viewed the decision of the executive with great concern. The exhibition was being held in order to demonstrate the resources of the Empire, and if the executive maintained its attitude it would abandon a very valuable medium in that connection.
The Stamp Duties Bill was passed without amendment. The Council decided to recommend the Government to adopt many important technical amendments proposed by the Statutes Revision Committee.
The Workers Compensation Bill was passed with minor amendments, Main Highways Bill and the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill were read a second time pro forma and referred to committees. The Aid. to Public Works and Land Settlement Bill was read a first time. The Council adjourned at 9.45 p.m.
