THE COMPETITIONS.

THIRD NIGHT'S SESSION. MUSIC AND ELOCUTION. • Recitations, readings, action songs, pianoforte duets and violin solos combined to make up a pleasing programme of music and elocution at the third session of the competitions held at St. Andrews Hall, New Plymouth, last night. All the performers were under 15 years of age and acquitted themselves very creditably. At the conclusion of the evening some of the judges generouslly enlarged on the results of the awards, pointing out to competitors in careful detail in what ways their performances could be improved and not hesitating to give praise where praise was due. The awards made are as follows: — RECITATION (15 and under). The seventeen competitors in this section had 'been reduced to the best five, who were recalled to give their item at the evening session. J. Mountjoy (80 points) 1 David Wright (74 points) 2 F. Cleland (73 points) 3 Also competed: Patricia Milne (70 points) and Russell Bree (67 points).

ACTION SONG (10 and under). Miriam Allen (40 points) 1 The only competitor. The judge explained that the competitor had a very light voice, which unfortunately could scarcely be heard above the sound of the piano. He recommended her for a second class certificate. READING (15 and under). , Readings: Extract from Macaulay’s “Essay on Clive” and A. H. Clough’s f'Say Not, the Struggle Nought Availeth.” Marjorie Ross (83 points) 1 ILynda Bullock (82 points) 2 Eunice Brokenshire (80 points) . 3 Also competed: Argoyd Evans and Harry George (76), Zetland Hardgrave (73).

The judges could not decide between the first two competitors and recalled them to read a difficult passage from Browning’s “The Lost Leader.” Both competitors were afterwards complimented on their renderings. PIANOFORTE DUETS (15 and under). Nancy Skelton and Seton Richardson (60 points) 1 Gwen and Ina Lawrence (55 points) 2 Nancy and Gertrude Skelton (53 points) d Also competed: Phyllis Coker and Noeline Thomson (45 points) and Alice and Elsie Bell (40 points). VIOLIN SOLO (15 and under). Marjorie Ladner (60 points) 1 Donald Robertson (58 points) 2 Jas. Kenneth Ward (55 points) .... 3 Also competed: Charles Hodge (50 points) and Delores Jellyman (40 points). I The judges intimated difficulty in reaching a decision between the first [ two and it was stated that, although he I had been placed second, Donaldson had ■ the makings of a very good violinist. i The competitions will continue at seven o’clock to-night.
