WORK AFTER SCHOOL
BAD EFFECTS ON CHILDREN.
“FRIVOLOUS ENTERTAINMENTS.” By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the Legislative Council to-day, the Hon. M. Cohen initiated a discussion on child labor, and the Council unanimously passed the following motion: “That the attention of the Government 'be drawn to the necessity of preventing ! the employment of children of school age in employment which interferes with their school work.” i Several members stated that it was not employed before school hours which had a serious effect upon school children, but late hours at night. Children received too much encouragement to attend picture shows and frivolous entertainments. The Leader of the Council (Sir William Fraser) said that the Government had had the problem before it for many years. It realised that any interference with homo life might be resented. However, he would be pleased to hear any suggestions which might be helpful in framing suitable legislation.
