AMERICA’S DRASTIC LAW, THE RULING UPHELD. further appeal likely, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, October 23. Judge Hand upheld the Daugherty ruling and refused the applications by various shipping companies to be permitted to carry liquor. The companies will appeal to the Supreme Court. The Washington. authorities announce that the Daugherty order will now be rigorously enforced. Received October 24, 8.25 p.m. New York, Oct. 23. Regarding the judgment on Mr. Daugherty’s liquor ruling, Judge Hand pointed out that the decision was not applicable to American ships on the high seas, and he invited counsel for the United States’ shipping interests to submit a memorandum, inasmuch as the ruling was nebulous concerning westbound ships.—Aus.-N.Z. The effect of the ruling is that no ship—American, British, or any other—entering an American port and thus coming within the three-mile limit, can carry liquor, even for consumption during the voyage.
