SCOUTS’ SPORTS.
THE ANNUAL GATHERING. RESULTS OF THE RACES. The second annual scouts’ sports were held at Kawaroa Park, New Plymouth, yesterday, when a full sports programme was provided for the boys and girls associated with the movement. The wind made conditions rather unpleasant, but the weather remained fine. All the officials worked hard to ensure .the success of the sports, and their efforts were not in vain. The committee in charge of the races comprised Messrs A. Hooker, J. K. Hawkins, and Briggs, while the scout officials, who had the general management and organisation of the gathering, were Mr. F. L. Trueman (chairman of the North Taranaki Scouts’ Association), Mr. Ralph Watson, and Miss Davy, joint secretaries. District 'Scoutmaster Scott, Scoutmasters Hopkins and Blackhall, Assistant Scout-Master McGahey, Scoutmistresses Taylor, Harding and McMurray (Stratford). Mr. King also assisted. The troops represented were Te Henui, New Plymouth, Hinemoa, St. Mary’s, Waitara, and the Wahine Girls’ Peace Scouts.
A number of stalls and side-shows were conducted in conjunction with the sports, those in charge beir : Produce.—Mesdames Roebuck, Tippips and Julian. Sweets.—Mrs. Beale and the Misses Beale. Jumble.—Mesdames Knott, Gray and Miss Davy. i Cocoanut shy.—Messrs. Millman and Taylor. Prize rooster.—Mr. T. Petty. Sheep-guessing.—Mr. Riley. Fish-pond.—Mr. J. Hoskin. Soft drinks.—Messrs. Waters and Y. Hoskin. Pigeon pool.—Messrs. Trueman and Watson. Afternoon tea. —Kawaroa ladies’ committee, with Mrs. Oliver in charge. Numerous children’s races wefre held. The function concluded with a dance in the evening, at the bungalow, when the results of the competitions were announced. Mr. Taylor’s cake (No. 19)—Mrs. Howard. ‘Hygienic” cake (5 lb 3 oz.)—Miss Rlelly (correct weight). Camera and scarf (peas in bottle, 1291) Mr. H. King 1200; Miss Murray, Stratford (sifc scarf), 1503. Cushions (peas in bottle, 1849)—Mr. E. White 1793, A. E. Pinson 1764. Sheep-guessing (weight 150 lb) —Mr. McPherson, Robe Street, 145 lb, and Mr. J. Brandon, care Fire Station, 145 lb, tied. Doll (Mary).—Mrs. A. H. Ambury, Lucy Johnston (Waitara), Pat Julian, A. J. King. In the draw, Mrs. Ambury won. Tin of tea (concealed number, 9)—Mrs. Roebuck. Mr. J. K. Hawkins’ championship cup (to be held by a troop, for boy winning most points in sports) : Scout B. Lawrence (New Plymouth), 22 points. Prizes can be obtained from Swainson’s studio, 100 Devon Street. The gross takings for the day (including the dance) amounted to £65, which will go towards the Scout funds.
