RIFLE SHOOTING.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. THE OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of the New Plymouth Rifle Club yesterday attracted about twenty shootists to the Waiwakaiho range. Two matches were fired, one over distances up to GOO yards in the morning, and’ from 800 yards to 1000 yards during the afternoon. A tricky wind, blowing intermittently, was against good shooting, but some good scores were registered, the first four in each match being remarkably close. Handicapping was determined on the automatic system; that is, the latest three best scores were subtracted from the possible of 315 and the remainder by four. Tallies yesterday showed the fairness of this method, and there is an additional advantage in the eliminating of personal factors.

At the close of the meeting the president (Mr. G. Ramson), presented the champion cup and gold medal to Deputy-President G. Grover, and cups to Rifleman S. Higgs and Rifleman J. Reed, winners of the Saturday competitions and the B grade championship respectively. Details of yesterday’s matches are as follows :
