THE RAILWAYS.
DECREASED REVENUE. SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION IN EXPENDITURE. The railway working account for the financial year up to September Iflth last shows a falling off in revenue for both North and South Islands, as compared with the corresponding period last year. Against this there is a substantial decrease in the expenditure. The total revenue for the full period under review is £2,847,816, compared with £3.034,005, a decrease of £186,189. The figures for the North Island were £l,-642,473 (last year £l,804,944), Sout/h Island £1,205,343 (last year £1,229,061). The total expenditure for the full period was. —North Island. £1,466,108, decrease £256,376; South Island £l,* 1-62,-528, decrease £203,263. Grand total £2,628,630, decrease £459,640.
A comparative statement of traffic on all sections from April Ist to September 16th shows that the number of passengers carried was 6,03'7,60'8, compared with. 6.219,7*91 last year.
