BRITISH RAILWAYS. London, October 22. The southern group of railways, comprising the London and South-Western, the London and Brighton and South Coast, and the South-Eastern and Chatham companies, are amalamating. The total capital of the new amalgamated company will be 145 millions sterling. THE WORTHLESS MARK. London, October 22. The Berlin exchange ie 19,800 marks to £l. AMERICA AND HAITI. Washington, October 20. It is announced that the United States’ occupational forces will evacuate the Island of Haiti to-day. A provisional Government will replace the United States. NEAR EAST CONFERENCE.
Moscow, October 21. Tchitcherin has sent a Note to Britain and Italy demanding full Russian participation in all the Near East conferences. He says Russia cannot accept an invitation to any supplementary conference discussing only the question of the Straits, which cannot be settled separately, and he reserves his rights to support a Russo-Turkish pact whereby the settlement of the Straits problems ought to be left to the Black Sea Powers. TRAFALGAR DAY London, October 21. Among the wreaths placed on the Nelson column on Trafalgar Day was one of New Zealand flowers, packed in ice, sent by the Wellington branch of the Navy League. FRENCH RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Paris, October 22. An express train collided with a goods train at, Rowffach, in Alsaca'Lorraine, as the result of a mistake in setting the points. Eleven were killed and 20 injured. VIEWS ON PROHIBITION. Perth, October 23. Sir James Mitchell, the Premier, replying to an anti-liquor deputation requesting an independent} Government report on the working of prohibition in America., said the anti-liquor party would get a shock when the report was submitted. People would not change the habits of a lifetime without a protest. Americans protested by resorting to drugs. The community would be better off economically without drink or tobacco, but there would not be much enjoyment in life. GLIDING TN ENGLAND. London, October 22. Maneyrole, a French airman, won the Daily Mail’s £lOOO prize in the gliding contest at Ilford, remaining in the air 3hr. 22min.
