NORTH TARANAK! PLAY, THE SEASON OPENED. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The 1922-23 cricket season opened in North Taranaki on Saturday, in rather unfavorable weather conditions, a stiff wind blowing throughout the afternoon, while several heavy showers fell.
New Plymouth beat Vv’aitara and Western Park defeated Urenui in the A grade. In the B grade both Western Park teams gained victories in the only two matches played. Lambert’s half-century, made for New Plymouth, was the best batting effort of the day, while with the ball Clarke (New Plymouth), with six for 7 runs, took most wickets for the least runs. A GRADE. NEW PLYMOUTH v. WATTARA. A substantial victory was obtained by the New Plymouth team who travelled to Waitara to try conclusions with the local team, the scores being: New Plymouth 155 (Lambert "> - i, Newbold 40), Waitara 19. Naturally the New Plymouth trundlers secured flattering averages, Clarke getting six wickets for 7 runs and Newbold three for 9. WESTERN PARK v. URENUI. The Western Park eleven travelled to Urenui to meet the country team, the visitors winning an interesting one-innings match by 91 runs to 47. For the winners, Hallej’ 30, Hart 23, and (1. E. Dinniss 14 wielded the but to best effect, while C. Wilson’s 13 was the best tally on the home team’s side. With the ball, the Western Park bowlers, Quickfall (with four for 3 runs) and Grayson (with four for 16), secured most of the wickets. Urenui tried out seven bowlers. T. I The other senior competition match, High : School v. Old Boys, which was set down for Saturday, was played the previous week, when High School won by 163 runs to 78. Inglewood had a bye. B GRADE. WESTERN PARK ROVERS v. HARBOR WORKS. The wicket at Western Park was very bumny for the above match, and as the bowlers quickly took advantage of this the- scoring was low. • Winning the toss-, the Park skipper sent his opponents in first, but they were soon dismissed for 45 runs (Cameron 18). Rovers replied with 43 runs (N. Harris 23, R. Harris 10). Harbor Works, in their second innings, made 41 runs (Whitaker 22). Requiring 14 runs in three-quarters of an hour to save the game. Rovers started badly, losing four wickets for 15 runs; but L. Harris (21) and Berg (7 not out) stopped the “rot,” and Rovers won In an exciting finish by five wickets on tlie call of time. Bowling for Rovers, Bnilot and Morrison each seured nine wickets, whilst for Harbor Works G. Casey and Cameron took seven wickets each.
WESTERN PARK WANDERERS v. TECHNICAL COLLEGE. A margin of nine runs gave Western Park Wanderers the victory in their match at the racecourse against Technical College. The winners scored 62 (H. At a meeting of school teachers at Hawera, on Saturday, it was decided to revive the school cricket competition started some years ago by Mr. Lyall, of Kaponga. A committee was set up to control the competition, and Mr. Mason Is to circularltt country schools for entries.
