NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, Oct. 21. The weather was excellent for the opening day of the Wellington spring races, and the course was in good order. Racing opcnca with the Talta Handicap. Caress wound up bettv backed than Avonlea. The field was released to a good start, and when they had gone a couple of furlongs Avonlea was in front, with Benmure close up. Avonlea was first to swing on to the course proper, but when they straightened up for home Benmure took charge. Avonlea took command again below the distance and shook off Benmure and Attractive, both of whom threw out challenges. Over the last half furlong Caress came very fast, but could not get to Avonlea, who won by a length. Benmure was a neck away third, Attractive was close up fourth, and Laughing Stock was fifth.

In the Wainul Handicap Haurangi led at the start from Martian Miss and Mountain Lion, with Ambitious and Bodyguard well up. At the five furlongs Haurangi still had charge, and next in order were Ambitious, Martian Miss, Blackmail, and Bonnie Heather. The order was practically unchanged as they turned for home, but at the distance Bonnie Heather came very fast, and cutting down the opposition, won by three lengths from Martian Miss, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Haurangi. Ambitious was fourth, and the next to finish were Zircon, Royal Box. Blackmail, Cleasanta, Mountain Lion, and Whipping Boy. In the Rimutaka Handicap the principal fancies were Merry Day, Gold Light, Kaotane, and Joy Ride. The start was excellent, and the field raced in a bunch for some little distance, with Santiago, Merry Day, Joy Ride, and Penitent at the head of affairs. At the five furlongs Santiago was clear and piloting the field with a several lengths’ advantage over Joy Ride, Merry Day, and Yankee Dan, with Militaire and Penitent well up. Santiago came Into the straight with a lead of several lengths, but Joy Ride was going well, and at the distance took charge, getting home a winner by two and a half length? from Santiago. Rcdlogue finished fast in third place. Yankee Dan was fourth. Merry Day fifth, Militaire sixth, and Gold Light seventh. Almoner, Tenterfleld. King’s Trumpeter, and Sunart were taken out ' of the Wellington Handicap, and this left a field of thirteen to go to the post. Equitable drew the inner, and next to him at the barrier was Printemps, then Kilgour and Winning Hit, with Scion on the outer. The field left in perfect line, and as they passed the stand Printemps, Winning Hit, Equitable, and Thespian were at the head of affairs. Kilgour was last, just behind Insurrection. At the mile the order was Printemps. Winning Hit. Equitable. Thespian, Bitters, Rouen and Trespass. At the seven furlongs I Winning Hit was in charge from Bitters and i Printemps, with Thespian and Rouen next. Gasbag was well back, and Bonnetter was moving up. Winning Hit was still in charge from Bitters at the five furlongs, and three lengths back came Bonnetter. Printemps was at the head of the others. Bitters and Winning Hit led into the straight, with Bonnetter going well just behind. A good finish ensued, Bonnetter finally triumphing by a length over Winning Hit, with Bitters half a length back. Scion was fourth, and Trespass and Gasbag next. Thespian was at the tall of the field and was reported to have cut a tendon. Passenger was fancied for the First Hurdle Handicap, and Cerberus was next in demand. Pacific Slope lost his rider at the first fence, and the two next fences found Cerberus and Sir Wai parting company with their riders. Black Art was the early leader, but Otauru Kid went to the front entering the back stretch and was not again headed, winning by eight lengths from Sir Fanciful, with Kyoto throe lengths away third. Fisher was fourth and Wamba last. A very nice looking lot of two-year-olds were saddled up for the Wellesley Stakes, ana of these Owlscombe was fancied. Owlscombe got shut out at the start, and the early leader was Homage, with Tukia and Deluge well up. Tukia was the leader at the bottom of the straight, but Murihaupo and Deluge were close up., Owlscombe was gathering the field, though she was too far hack to have a chance. At the distance Queen’s March came fast and simply strolled past the leaders, going on to win easily by a length from Tukia. Murihaupo was a length and a half away third and Deluge was fourth. Glentruin, Grotesque, and The Hawk were the best backed In the Shorts Handicap. Listowel and Civilform were early in the lead, and Astinome, wide out. was well up. The Hawk was lying in behind the leaders, and as they swung out a shade at the turn on ♦o the course proper he moved to the front. He was in the lead at the distance, and looked all over a winner till thirty yards from the post, where Grotesque came through, and heading the leader, went on to win by a seek. Glentruin was half » length away third,

and the next to finish were Passionless, Astinome, and Civilform. Gazeworthy turned out to be the good thing it was believed he was in the October Handicap. After being in front practically all the way he won well by two lengths from Tinihanga, with Danger Zone and Para next.

CAULTTLO CUP

WON BY WHITTIER. TANGALOOMA A LENGTH AWAY, RECORD TIME EQUALLED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Oct. 22, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 22. The weather was fine and warm for the Caulfield races yesterday. Owing to the burning of the members’ stand and the Press and telegraph rooms, the meeting was conducted under great difficulties. Tlie attendance was estimated at 50,000. The Governor-General attended, and presented the Cup and trophy to Whittier’s owner, Mr. Ben Chaffey. Coolah, trained by Mr. Godby, won the Gwyne Nursery Handicap well. Paradox was unplaced. The Caulfield Cup was a great race. Whitlter, which won well in record time, is trained by H. McCalman, and cost £250 as a yearling. Simmons, -the rider, stated he had a good ride, though he was interfered with once. Dempsey, the rider of Stare, stated he had a very bad run. Principal results:

GWYNE NURSERY HANDICAP.—CooIah 9.0, 1 Warrego 9.6, 2 ; Unit 7.8, 3. Twenty-five started. Won by half a length, with two and flhalf lengths between second and third. Wacrego had a two lengths’ lead at the turn. Time, 1 min. 2% sec. H. Cairns rode Coolah. CAULFIELD CUP\ One mile and a half. B. Chaffey’s br c WHITTIER, by VVoorak— Polacca (E. Simmons) 1 James Clarke’s br g TANGALOOMA, by Linacre —Auriety, 6 yrs, (A. Wood) 2 PURSER (H. Cairns) 3

Twenty-three starters. Beeline was the only withdrawal. All Soral gave trouble at the barrier, and unseated its rider, but was soon remounted. Violoncello went to the front and led a crowded field round the first turn. Yacamunda went to the front at the mile, but after a couple of furlongs had been covered Dunwil took control from Easingwold at the railway side. Half a mile from home Dunwil was closely attended by Whittier and Soorak, while Sister Olive had dropped back last. Purser was first in front of Whittier turning into the straight, and at the distance Tangalooma was prominent. Whittier stalled off a challenge by Tangalooma and won by a length. Purser was three-quarters of a length away, and Violoncello was fourth, Master Vibrator and Heir Apparent following. The Cypher was seventh and Molyneaux eighth. Stare had a bad run and was last, while Soorak was eleventh. The Time, 2 min. 32 sec., equals Lucknow’s record for the race.

WINDSOR HANDICAP.—Prince Tressady 8.7, 1; Salatis 9.8, 2; Weedah 7.11, 3. Sixteen starters. Weedah and Sunburst lead early in the race. Won by a length and a half, with the third horse a neck away. Mermin was eighth. Received Oct. 22, 11.5 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 22. Allanton broke a leg yesterday in the Windsor Handicap, and was subsequently destroyed. Radiant Light will arrive to-morrow. Hugh Cairns had four wins, and is the leading jockey for the Caulfield Cup meeting. RACING AT SYDNEY. Received Oct. 22, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 22. The Canterbury Park Three-qear-old Maiden Handicap resulted: The Shag 1, Sir Walter 2. Lymington and Manola (dead heat)' 3. Won bj’ half a length. Time, 1 mln. 14 3-5 sec. THE CHAMPION PLATE. (By "Moturoa.”) The principal event to be decided at Trenthaun to-day is the Champion Plate, of 1000 sors., a mile and a quarter race at standard weight-for-age. Gloaming is on hand again, after missing the contest for a couple of years, and judging by his fine form in 'Stralla—particularly over this, his pet distance—the champion should not. have great difficulty in upholding his well won title. The race has almost invariably been won by hot favorites, and there seems no reason to expect a departure from the rule to-day.

Gloaming first contested the Champion Plate in 1918, when he ran in an easy winner from Menelaus and Bonnie Maid. In 1919 he was again produced, and had to run 2min. 7 1-5 sec. to beat Affectation by half a length. Mascot being third. Gloaming has to win to-day to equal Desert. Gold's record of three victories. Desert Gold made her appearanace in the Champion Plate of 1915, when she led Nonqs and Battle Eve home. The following year she again beat Nones—this time in 2min. 7sec., with Taringamutu third. In 1917 Mr. T. H. Lowry held an exceptionally strong hand in the race, Desert Gold scoring easily from her stablemate, Estland, with Menelaus third. In the absence of Gloaming, Amythas easily accounted for Karo and Arrowsmith in 1920, and under similar circumstances won in 1921, Rouen being only a neck away second, and Grotesque third. It is a thousand pities that Amythas could not be properly tuned up to measure strides with Gloaming to-day. but good ns the Foxton-owned horse undoubtedly is, it would be folly for his owner to ask him to take on such a fit horse as Gloaming under present circumstances. These horses have never met, and probably never will. To return to to-day’s racing, it is rather difficult to judge the strength of the field at time of writing, but it is to be hoped that the owners of Winning Hit, Gasbag, Thespian and The Hawk will run their horses to make the champion gallop.

THE WAVERLEY MEETING. All Taranaki and his best girl—or possibly the wife and kids—will be off to Waverley this morning, the attraction being the popular little country race meeting, where friends from all parts of the coast are in the habit of meeting at least once a year. Unfortunately the weather is rather unsettled, but it is to bo hoped that we are not in for a repetition of last year’s shocking wind and rain. Fields promise to he large, and racing Interesting. With no big meetings very close ahead it Is expected the punters will be kept fairly busy picking the winners. Proceedings will open with the Morton Memorial Handicap, six furlongs, and, of the poor lot engaged, Halgina, Pirouette, and Merry Ann may carry the bulk of the money.

The Brewer Handicap, six furlongs, will provide a good finish if Irapuka, Inah and Roman go to the post. Inah is sure to go very fast for at least five furlongs, and it will be Interesting to see if the top-weight can gather her in over the final furlong. Some very fair horses are engaged in the Handicap Hurdles, one imile and a half, and a lot of rubbish besides! Simonides failed to win a hurdle race last season, and will not find much favour. Kato’s last brace of victories were over steeplechase fences, which may cause him to jump too big. Whizz Bang has been doing good work at Follding, and although he let his party down at Marton (where he met horses like Otauru Kid and Mattock), he should take some heading off to-day. Polthogue should account for the 9st. division.

The Wilson Welter, seven furlongs, will only draw a small field. The ►Auckland Cup candidate (ahem!), Skylight, is top-weight, and if he has any chance at Ellerslie to-day’s minor event should be easy for him. One would prefer Miss Bcauforte over a shorter distance, but Husker should see the journey oui. Hindi has not done anything for a longtime, but is said to be galloping well nt Wanganui. Provided they- go to the post, Skylight and Husker will have a big army of backers. The Waverley Cup, one mile and a quarter, should be a fine race. Marqueteur and Tame Fox represent quality in the field, and on recent fonni the Fordell horse should run well. The Waverley course suits him, as his record shows. In 1919 he won the Morton Memorial Race with 9.6; in 1920, with 8.4, he ran Depredation (8.5) to three-quarters of a length in the Cup; and last year he finished first with 8.9 in the Cup. If yoit believe in "horses for courses” you know what to do. Warrawee and Erie are also fancied in some quarters, but Tame Fox’s most dangerous opponent at the finish may be Marqueteur.

Pouma looks like starting a warm order in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs. Scratchings may materially reduce the number of runners in the Moumahaki Stakes, one mile, hut Lady Nassau and Yolande are likely runners. Cochineal statute he&d a&d shoulders above

the crowd in the Jackson Memorial Handicap, five furlongs.

TURF TOPICS. In addition to Trentham and Waverley, a whole host of other centres will have races to-day. The Waikato Hunt, Gore spring. North Canterbury and Oxford annual, and Waipawa annual meetings will be in full swing, while there will be trotting events at Greymoutn, Gore, Oamaru and Ranglora. Labor Day is well named as far as Pegasus is concerned! Exceptionally large fields, averaging over twenty a race, are carded for to-day's Waikato Hunt meeting, to be held at Claudelands, Royal Ahbey, Golden Bubble, Triboule*, and Pittsworth appear to be nicely treated in the principal events. Kikinl, on Masterton form, appears to have a chance in her Waipawa engagements to-day, and Raffle, Munus. and First Born may run forward In minor events. Taranaki’s quota in the Auckland Cup: Income, Muraahi. Cold Steel, Stork and Skylight. Railway Handicap: Rational, Silver Link, Hipo and Danger Zone. In the Old Dart the Bar Vons are going crook about the names given to horses, and instance a. trio of tongue-twisters—Bhuidhaon-ach, Suryakumari, and Aanadyomene. Just Imagine asking a busy man to eall the odds about that lot, let alone write them hurriedly upon betting tickets. At one place “Aanadyamene” was converted into "Anno Domini,” and later cn into "Adam and Eve 1" Talking of racehorse nomenclature, what a crowd of ridiculous names are met with at "the smalls” in the Dominion. Take the Waikato Hunt meeting, for instance, with Nut and Bolt, Pretty Man. Hamblin's Kid, Prince Ngahlnepourl, Elsie Aroha, Rafferty, Blanche Abbey, King Pellicule, and Pan'chlto. And down south they have absurdities like Eighteenpence, Bosker Boy, Swimashore, Hollow Log, Straight Flush, Getaway, Hurdy Gurdy, and Overproof.
