TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Caulfield Cup to-day. Waverley races on Monday. Wellington to-day and on Monday. Bonnie Wlnkie will not be produced at TrentAvonlea (Absurd—Holyrood) is in the TaPa Handicap. Pantagruel, by Panmure—Adelicia, is fairly smart. Whipping Boy may keep them busy in the Wainui Handicap to-day. It is hard to go past Merry Day In the Rimutaka Handicap. It is stated that Epitaph will be reserved for the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. Trainer Jefferd has a stunning pair in the Wellington Handicap—Gasbag and King's Trumpeter. Passenger (A. McDonald) and Mattock (W. D. Young) promise ts ohow up in the hurdle races at Trentham. Owlscombe (Autumnus—Glenowlet) should be fancied in the Wellesley .Stakes, and Geo. Currie’s prad will also carry money. Grotesque is hot stuff for the sprint at Trentham to-day, and on track form looks hard to beat. Wonder if Glentruin is quite good enough ? There is a terrible lot of rubbish in the October Handicap at Trentham, and Gazeworthy, with A. Reed in the saddle, will carry the bulk of the investments. Cupidon, Royal Box and Muraahl are in favor for the N.Z. Cup, and in the Stewards’ Handicap the Isaacs are taking no risks about Grotesque Epitaph, Rational, Anomaly, Tho

Hawke, Solfanello, Songbird, Pluto and Mirellsonta.

In reply to an inquirer, it is mentioned that Sir Geo. Clifford’s two-year-old filly, Owlscombe, by Autumnus—Glenowlet, did not start in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin, though the Press Association reported that she was bracketed with the winner, Top Score. Owlscombe is sister to Corncrake, and half-sister to Nightwatch, Brown Owl, Wise Bird, etc.

Sydney papers reported that Ridicule, by Absurd—Cheloma (dam of Prince Ferouz) was not doing well since her arrival in 'Stralia, but she rewarded Mr. H. R. Denison oy winning the Two-year-old Handicap at Tattersail's meeting on Monday last. Ridicule was bred by Mr. W. G;. Stead, and was sold for 1000 guineas as a yearling.

The defunct Hallowmas was responsible fur a couple of good winners last Saturday, Stork (Hallowmas—White Crane) winning the principal handicap at Whangarei, and Festivity (Hallowmas —Rosie Desmond) performing similarly at Masterton. Although some breeders have a terrible ‘‘down” on the breed, it must be admitted that the imported horse got a few useful performers from anything but topnotch mares.

Sunart, who won the Wellington Handicap last year, broke down again recently, and may be written out of Trentham and Riccarton engagements. Mr. R. A. McKenzie will therefore have to rely on Kilgour at the two places mentioned.

With a little more experience, Karutahi, a three-year-old gelding by Absurd—Chakwana, will be worth punting on. As Masterton last week he showed a lot of pace, finishing close up third in the Farewell Handicap on the first day, and only just being beaten by Uleabarg in the last stages of the Final Handicap. Such a beautifully-bred horse could hardly be other than a speedy sprinter. When Hula Boy met with such injuries at Marton that he had to be destroyed, considerable sympathy was expressed for Mr. J. A. Taylor, who had just bought the black colt from Mr. W. F. Desha, of Hawke’s Bay, for (it is alleged) 800 guineas. Concerning the above, Mr. Taylor writes to The Referee stating that Mr. Desha, on learning that the colt was not insured, generously returned the whole of the purchase-money paid some seven weeks previously. This is a sporting action, anyhow, and one that should be pointed out to our kill-sport frineds.

Concerning the English-bred mare, Glentruin, which won the Electric Handicap at Dunedin last week, a southern scribe states that she carried lb overweight, bringing her impost up to 7.9,%. She hopped out smartly from No. 1 position, but C. Emerson steadied her, and all looked well until well in the straight, when it was seen that she was "snowed in" in an apparently hopeless position. Emerson could not>. find an opening near the fence, so he quickly pulled back, and came round the field. Once clear, Glentruin quickly put the issue beyond doubt, running home an easy winner by two lengths m 1.14 3-5. It was an impressive performance, and Glentruin appears likely to win many good races for Trainer F. D. Jones. The same scribe states that Ballymena sadly disappointed F. D. Jones in the McLean Stakes, beginning slowly and hanging out all the way. Possibly the youngster has had too much travelling and racing, but Jones is not satisfied with the Nassau gelding’s Dunedin running, and hopes to do better at Trentham.
