(From Our Own Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Mrs. Malcolm was largely attended. Deceased and her husband were original settlers in Oaonui under the West Coast Settlements Act, and had resided continuously at Oaonui for 35 years. Special reference was made at ’the Presbyterian Church to deceased’s assistance from the inception of the Presbyterian Church in this district.
At the annual meeting of the Seaside Society last week, the balance showed receipts £352, the whole of which was expended. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr. O. J. Hawken, M.P.; president. Mr. T. S. Hickey; vice-presidents, Dr. Watt, Sir W. Carncross, Messrs. A. Cook. F. Corrigan, G. Merrick, G. Taylor, P. Allen., J. McMillan, E. Dixon, C. A. Strack, H. B. Gibson, J. P. purton, C. A. Trotter. A. E. Brunette, T. Hughson, E. Whitham, J. Martin, F. Julian and Mrs. Nightingale; secretary, Mr. C 0. Edmonds; auditor. Mr. G. Walker. There should be no excuse for residents in this district to be omitted from the sub-electoral rolls. In addition to the political parties, the license and prohibition canvassers are making house to house canvasses for enrolment.
The Bowling Club opened the season on Wednesday afternoon last with the usual president v. vice-president match. Miss Nancy Andrews, daughter of the president ‘(Mr. N. 0. Andrews) performed the ceremony of throwing the jack. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. The number of subscribers to the telephone exchange is 45, and 51 is expected so as to get the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. concession.
The Egmont County Council, at its last meeting, created new riding boundaries. The alterations, which were done without notice of motion, will probably have to be re-created. At the S.M. Court on Monday, the adjourned case, McKeown v. McCann, was concluded. Plaintiff claimed £35 for alleged misrepresentation of the class of sheep bought at auction. The line comprised wethers for fattening purposes. and defendant informed prospective buyers that thefc wetf seven or eight ewes in the line. McKeown bought them, and later found that there were over thirty ewes included. The evidence for the defence was that the number was not more than seven or eight, and the probability was that the sheep got mixed on sale days by incursions from other lines on sale, also that there was no intent to mislead. Judgment was given for ?TcKeown for £25, with Court costs £ll 12s.
On Wednesday afternoon a garden party was held at Mrs. G. W. Rogers’ residence in aid of preliminary expenses for the children’s stall at the forthcoming Church of England bazaar. The attendance was large. Games of various kinds were indulged in, :and an enjoyable and profitable afternoon was the result.
