FORTUNE-TELLERS FINED.
RAIDS IN MELBOURNE. Sydney, October 4. Reluctant appearance® hr/ve been made in the Melbourne City Court bv several persons who. posing a-S' spiritualists, have unsuspectingly attempted to tell the fortunes- of policewomen. The police raids have been carried out systematically. and the two women engaged have not only performed their work intelligently. but have also proved level-head-ed witnesses. Heavy fines have been imposed on the alleged seers, some of whom, according to the police evidence, have operated in other capital cities of the Commonwealth before establishing their name-plates in Melbourne. On? was in Brisbane a few years ago, and while there had to defend a similar charge. The Melbourne police are determined to continue their campaign against the fortune-tellers, many of whom enjoy great prosperity, having a regular clientele of superstitious enthusiasts. An additional policewoman has been appointed, and the authorities look forward to a further harvest of fines. No action, of course, will be taken against genuine spiritualists, who do not use their beliefs for monetary gain.
