WAITARA.
HARBOR BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.)) October 17. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbor Board was held on Friday last. Mr. A. W. Ogle presided in the absence of the chairman (Mr. Jas. Hine). Mr. T. B. Evans waited on the board relative to the amount of £2O he was paying for one of the leases. He asked the board to make some concession to him, as when he tendered butter-fat was being sold at a high price, but the fall in price had altered the position. He referred to the Government and private bodies reviewing rentals, and he thought some consideration should be shown by the board. He asked that the lease be put up for auction again, when he would guarantee to bid up to £l3, which he thought was a fair rental at the present time and would give the board a good return.—Mr. Ogle said that the endowments the board held were given for revenue purposes, and the board was bound to let them to the best advantage, but at the same time he and other members thought that Mr. Evans had paid too much. The hands of the board were tied, but if anything could be done in the matter it would be. The whole question would need to go before a full meeting of the board. The matter will be gone into. Captain Jensen, on behalf of the Seasid? and Surf Bathing Society, asked the board if they would give the society control of that piece of land where the pine trees stand. The society would give an assurance td keep the land in order and fence it.—A year-to-year right to control was given. The secretary reported that local owners of fishing-boats had requested that a light should be placed on the north wall as a guide when entering the river at night.— To be attended to.
GENERAL ITEMS. A band of amateurs are presenting a popular comedy called “The Wrong Flat” (which was staged here during war-time), on October 26, on behalf of St. John s Church. The first half of the programme will consist of concert items by the best singers. The local Seaside and Surf-bathing Society propose a monster picnic for Labor Day. Those who are “beach combers,” and others, should patronise this energetic so ciety, who are turning our beaches into beauty-spots. A novelty for Waitara, consisting of a Streamer and confetti dance, took place last Friday at Clifton Hall. There was a splendid attendance, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The flirtation dance was a feature, being in the capable hands of Mr. Longfellow, from Auckland, who introduced many novelties. Whilst the lights 1 were out spotlights were turned on at varying intervals. The orchestra was one of the best Waitara dancers have had the pleasure of listening to. A meeting called for the purpose of in augurating a rose show during November was well attended. The chair was occu pied by the Rev. W. W. Avery. A two days’ show for roses, in conjunction with a sale of work, was decided upon. A committee, consisting of the following, was appointed: Mesdames Marlow, A. Andrews, Lund, Johns, Wells, Ogle, Ford, Joil; Misses W. Tate and .Toll; Revs. Gavin and Avery, and Messrs. Sell and Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was appointed secretary. Membership tickets fixed at 2/6.
