FOREIGN EXCHANGES. RECORD SLUMP IN 3IARK. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Oct. IG. Following are the current exchange rates, a comparison being given with the last report (October 12) and par:—
The mark slumped to 13,000, a. record, on heavy German selling, and closed at 12,900. LOAN AND MERCANTILE REPORT. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited (Hawera branch), report as follows: At Palmer Road sale and bull fair on the 6th instant a good yarding of bulls particularly grade Jerseys came forward, but the enquiry generally was weak and only a few were disposed of. A good entry of dairy cattle met with a very satisfactory sale. We quote: Pedigree Jersey bulls to 17% guineas, grade Jersey 2-year maidens 10 guineas to 13% guineas, fat cows to £5 14s, forward cows £2 5s to £3 10s, store cows 30s to 365, Jersey cross yearling heifers £3 13s, springing cows good (close up) to £l4, heifers ditto £lO to £l3, calved heifers (good) £6 to £9 10s.
At Kakaramea sale and bull fair on the 9th instant a moderate yarding came forward and the bulk of the entry was disposed of under the hammer. Only a small entry of dairy cattle was penned and these were dull of sale. We quote: Pedigree Jersey bull 15% guineas, other breeds £4 to £6 10s, grade Jersey bulls (2 and 3-year) £7 10s to ,£l2, 3-year steers (fair) £2 19s, fat cows (light) £3 17s 6d to £4 18s, forward cows £2 6s to £2 17s 6d, store cows £1 2s 6d, Jersey yearling heifers (medium) £4 7s, others to £3 4s, springing heifers (good) £8 to £lO, others £5 to £6, cows (medium) £B. At Eltham sale and bull fair on the 11th instant the advertised number came forward. The bulk of the store pens consisted of steers and yearling heifers. The former in most cases failed to reach the vendors’ reserves, but fat cattle were all sold under the hammer at late rates. Dairy cattle were hard to quit, especially ordinary and inferior sorts. We quote: Fat. bullocks £7 to £7 ss, fat and forward ditto £5 10s to £6 6s, cows ditto £3 to £3 17s 6d, store cows £1 to £2 2s 6d, empty heifers £3 16s to £4 15s, pen of Holstein 2-year empty heifers £5 17s, bulls (mixed breeds and ages) £2 10s to £6 10s, springing heifers (good and close tc profit) £8 5s to £lO 10s, others £3 to £6, cows (medium) to £8 15s, fat and forward hoggets 21s. At Hawera on Thursday, 12th instant, a fair yarding came forward and the bulk o the store cattle sold at late rates. In the dairy section cattle came forward in full advertised numbers. Good quality heifers close to profit sold at satisfactory prices, but others were hard to quit. However, vendors in most cases were prepared to meet the market. We quote: Fat cows to £ 5 3s, forward ditto £3 Gs to £3 15s, store cows 26s to £2 2s 6d, Jersey yearling heifers (medium) £5 7s 6d, Jersey cross ditto £3, springing heifers (good) £8 to £lO 10s, others £3 to £6 10s, cows (medium) £7 to £9.
