TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOARD OF MANAGERS. THE FIRST MEETING. The first meeting of the newly-consti-tuted Board of Managers for the New Plymouth Technical College was held last night. Present: Messrs. J. S. Connett. G. H. Dolby, W. G. Reid, F. A. Coleman, W. Bicknell, R. J. Clarke, and P. J. H. White. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P. and A. L. Roberts. In proposing Mr. White as chairman, Mr. Dolby said they had two men on the board who had had long experience in educational matters in Mr. White and Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith, however, would be very busy during the next few months in his Parliamentary duties, and also because of the general election, and he therefore proposed Mr. White, who was a member of the Education Board, and had always taken an interest in the Technical College. Mr. White thought that someone else should take the chair. He had done his share on the Education Board and was still prepared to do so. He mentioned Mr. Dolby for the position. Mr. Dolby, however, declined, stating that he would not be able to visit the college during working hours, and so would not be able to confer with the principal. Mr. Connett then asked Mr. White to reconsider his decision, and several other members pressed him to accept the office, if only for three months. Mr. White, they stated, would be able to set the board going on the right lines.

On the understanding that the appointment was to be for three months I only, Mr. White accepted and took the chair amidst applause. Mr. A. L. Moore (principal of the college) was appointed secretary and treasurer to the board, and a committee comprising the chairman and Messrs. Connett and Dolby was set up to draw up an agreement as to duties and responsibilities.

A short discussion ensued as to what committees should be set up, and it was decided that a finance committee would be sufficient. On the motion of Mr. Dolby, seconded by Mr. Coleman, Messrs. C/onnett, Reid, and Clarke were appointed. The second Tuesday in the month, at 7.30 p.m., was fixed* for the monthly meetings of the board. Messrs. Coleman and Bicknell were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing year. The Wellington District Baptist Young Women’s Bible Class Union applied for the use of the college for sleeping and meal accommodation during their annual camp at Easter, 1923. —The application was referred to the chairman and Mr. Dolby, with power to act.

Specifications for school furniture were forwarded by Messrs. McPhun and Beavis, Wellington. The whole matter of desk accommodation was referred to the chairman and secretary to deal with.
