SAFETY FIRST.

SCAFFOLDING REGULATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 16. A deputation, repreesnting the New Zealand Federation of Master Painters, Decorators and Sign-writers, waited upon the Minister of Labor to-day and protested against the decision to enforce strictly the present scaffolding regulations, more particularly in the direction of requiring all scaffolding over 10 ft. high to be notified, and that on scaffolding over 10 ft. 18 in. planks should be. used and not 12 in. planks. The Minister (Mr. G. J. Anderson) informed the deputation that the safety of the workers must come above all other things. After the scaffolding accident at Auckland, which resulted in the death of four men, he gave instructions that the whole matter of the regulations and their enforcement should be looked into, and later a chief inspector was appointed. That officer had gone round the country, and, after a thorough investigation, had reported that the only thing to do was to insist upon the enforcement of the regulations.
