THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
■NEW PLYMOUTH VISIT LIKELY. TO PRESENT SHOOTING TROPHY. “In all probability His Excellency, the Governor-General (Lord Jellicoe) will be in New Plymouth on sports day, October 28, when the presentation of the Governor-General’s shooting trophy will be made to the school,’ stated the principal of the Boys’ High -School (Mr. W. H. Moyes) in a report to the High Schools Board last night. It will ’be remembered that the challenge trophy, awarded by Lord Jellicoe on the results of the Imperia) Challenge Shield shooting competitions, was won last year by the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. In a letter to the headmaster of the school, notifying the arrival of the trophy from England, the Governor-General states: “I send my heartiest congratulations to the New Plymouth High School cadets for their fine performance, which I believe they have beaten this year, and I hope they will put up a score which will take a lot of ’beating in order that the whole standard of cadets’ rifle shooting in New Zealand might be raised. I know that the High School has a great reputation for rifle shooting, and long may it continue.”
Although nothing has been arranged officially as yet it is hoped that, if Lord Jellicoe’s visit takes place as suggested, arrangements will be made for him to perform the unveiling ceremony in connection with the memorial gates erected at the entrance to the school by the old boys in memory of their comrades who fell in the war. These gates are now nearing completion.
