Particulars of the death of Dr. Hugh McCleland, of New Plymouth, on the Melbourne-Mildura express are given in the Donald (Victoria) Times. A lady passenger on the train said the conductor brought deceased into the carriage just after the train had left St. Arnaud. He was breathing heavily. Witness left the carriage for a few minutes, and when she returned the passenger was dead. Mrs. IlfcCleland said she and her husband were on a health trip to Mildura. Deceased had a weak heart, and knew it, and had been advised to take a rest and a change. Dr. Calhoun said he had been summoned to the railway station, and found deceased sitting up in the compartment, apparently asleep. Life was extinct, and probably he had been dead 15 minutes. He was of opinion that death was due to synco-pe. Constable Power reported that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the case. The funeral took place on the following day, Father Conlan officiating at the graveside.
