THE ROAD CYCLE RACE.
The great interest taken in Saturday’s round-the-mountain cycle race testifies to the popularity of the event with the public. The course is one that cannot be excelled, and probably not equalled, in the Dominion; for not only is it practically circular, but the roads are such as cannot be found outside Taranaki. In reviving this clean, healthy sport, those in charge of the arrangements must certainly be congratulated, for it promotes the physical fitness of the young men of the country; it affords the public much pleasure, and again brings into prominence a form of athletic contest that is deserving of every encouragement and should not be allowed to suffer for lack of support, especially as it has a utilitarian side. As it is open .’or anyone in the Dominion to take part in this race, it is quite possible that in the near future it may attract cyclists in far larger numbers than was the case on Saturday, and be another factor in making known to people outside the province the potentialities of Taranaki, the excellence of its roads and the beauty of its scenery. On these and other equally strong grounds it is pleasing to find this pre-war contest has been resumed, and the success of Saturday’s fixture engenders the hope that the race will henceforth be an annual fixture that will give an everincreasing stimulus to a sport that is within the reach of all physically fit young men in the country.
