BOWLING.
OPENING OF SEASON. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. Under favorable weather conditions on Saturday the New Plymouth bowling green was opened for the season in the presence of a good muster of bowlers and visitors, a number of ladles being present. Th president of the club, Mr. C. Carter, cordia l :.- welcomed the ladies, visiting bowlers and new members, bespeaking on behalf of the latter the kindly assistance of the older players. He 'mentioned that the executive aimed at the membership reaching 150, and already the numbers were approaching that figure. After alluding to the improvements made, the president called on Mrs. Carter to set. the jack in motion, a. ceremony that was performed amid cheers. The usual match of president v. vice-pre-sident was played, the green proving very satisfactory, thanks to the untiring efforts of I the green warden (Mr. Johnston) and the caretaker (Mr. Barnitt), the president being victorious by a small margin. WEST END CLUB. The West End Club officially opened their greens for play on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of visitors and ladies. The president (Mr. C. B. Harton), in extending a very hearty welcome to all, said he was very pleased indeed to see so many ladies present, and he took the opportunity, on behalf of the club, to thank them for their valuable assistance, so readily given week after week and year after year. He would also like to thank those members who had made such extensive improvement since last year. A special tribute was also paid to Mr. F. J. Hill, the green warden, the splendid condition of the greens being due entirely to his efforts. The president then presented the prizes won during the nast season, Mr. J. Lobb taking the senior shield and Mr. Grafton Sole the junior shield. A gold medal was presented to Mr. T. Billing for having won the senior championship three years in succession. Telegrams were received from the Vogeltown and Fitzroy Clubs wishing the club a successful season, and representatives were present from Wellington, Gonville and New Plymouth Clubs. Mr. J. R. Hill, responding on behalf of the New Plymouth Club, congratulated the club on the condition of their greens, and wished them a successful season. Mrs. Harton then threw the jack and, with the breaking of the club’s house flag, the greens wore declared open for play for the season. Three hearty cheers were given for the president, who had presented the club flag. The usual teams’ match, president v. vice-president, was then played, resulting in a win for the vice-president’s team by 116 to 97. Although the recent rains had made the turf a trifle heavy, both the bowling green and croquet lawn were in good order for the opening day of the Fitzroy Bowling and Croquet Club. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, who were welcomed h.v the president. Mr. E. Dingle. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Dingle wished all the clubs affiliated with the Taranaki Centre, and the Fitzroy Club in particular, a prosperous nnd enjoyable season. They had managed to get the croquet lawn into good order, and he was sure that with th* assistance of members and the caretaker they would soon have the bowling green in first-class order. The rain had retarded their efforts, and ht wished visitors to bear with them under the circumstances. After reading a few telegrams wishing the club every success he presented Mr. Percy Jury with the club's singles championship cup and medal that went with it. and Mr. G. R. White with the junior singles championship miedal. This was the second occasion, Mr. Dingle said, on which Mr. Jury had won the cup, while he had been runner-up twice. Amidst applause Mrs. Dingle then throw the first kitty, Miss Charteris (president of the Croquet Club) driving the opening ball on the croquet lawn. During the afternoon the ladies played enjoyable golf croquet. Mrs. Reader and Mrs. Gilmour tieing for first prize, while a match, president v. vice-president was played on the howling green with the following result, the president’s teams being mentioned first at each rink:— Bridgman, Perrott, Beadle, Dingle (s) 17; v. At Vogeltown the ceremony of officially opening the fourth season’s play was conducted on the club's green in the presence of about thirty players and a fair number of ladies. The president (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) prefaced his remarks by reading tory messages fro.ni the Fitzroy and West End Clubs. Although Vogeltown was a young club, consisting chiefly of younger players, they could claim at least two members who had been associated with the game for many years, Mr. G. Browne, in particular, being a very old bowler. Despite other attractions taking place that day, he was pleased to see 1 so many present. Their club was a happy I one, anad members enjoyed the game for me game’s sake. He extended a cordial welcome | to ladies and visitors. Before declaring the green open, he asked Mr. A. E. Washer, the representative from the New- Plymouth Chib, to say a few words. In thanking the president and (members for their welcome, Mr. Washer remarked that winning tournaments did not always mark the best players. 'During the season he hoped to see strong rinks from Vogeltown, and he expected players to ably sustain their ena. The president thenXcallcd upon Mr. W. Hooker, winner of last year's tournament, to receivq the Pioneer Cup, and also presented Mr. W. Healey with the trophy for handicap singles. Mrs. Griffiths threw the kitty, and the green was declared open. Afternoon ten was provided by tile ladles. The usual match, president v. vice-president, was played, resulting In a win for the president by a narrow margin. The green, though wet, proved fast and accurate, showing careful attention by the caretaker (Mr. A. Aldridge).
