NO MATCH WITH ENGLISHMEN. NORTH TARANAKI PROTEST. ~ The failure of the New Zealand Cricket Council to arrange a match at New Plymouth for the English team, captained by MacLaren, ha already been the subject of protests by i the North Taranaki Association, but the latest | reply from headquarters was to the effect that i the tour could not embrace New Plymouth. I Resenting this decision the association last i night held an indignation meeting, when an- . other protest ijas made against the action |of the council. It was pointed out that If I the arrangements were altered to enable* the J Englishmen to travel from Auckland to Wanganui, via New Plymouth, a one-day match could be played here without upsetting the tiates already fixed for Auckland and Wanganui. Further, the local association was preI pared to guarantee the expenses, and also to motor the visitors from New Plymouth to Wanganui. UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION. The Rev. W. J. Elliott convened a meeting (at the request of the North Taranaki Cricket Association) last evening for the purpose of forming a cricket umpires’ association. There was a fair attendance. Mr. Elliott occupied the chair and briefly explained the objects and aims of such an ! association, and it was resolved, on his motion, “that an umpires’ association be formed, to be known as the North Taranaki Umpires' Association, and that it consist of the following members with power to add: Messrs. J. Brown, H. A. Stratford, F. W. Packman, F. Willis, A. B. Mackie, C. Jordan, Geo. Palmer, and the mover.” Mr. Elliott was elected chairman and Mr. H. A. Stratford secretary and treasurer. Mr. J. Brown, the chairman and secretary, were elected as an appointment committee. The appointment of an examination committee was deferred. It was also resolved to select and appoint the umpires to the various matches week by week. 4t was decided that the secretaries of the country clubs be asked to supply to the associations the names of qualified men willing to act as one of the umpires at home and I country matches, in order to save travelling ' expenses. New members will be appointed by nomination on a majority vote. The membership fee | will be 2s 6d.
